Kings, Nets Have Had Extensive Trade Talks On Cam Johnson

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Jan 2, 2025 1:47 pm

The Sacramento Kings have had extensive talks with the Brooklyn Nets on a trade for Cam Johnson. Johnson is in Year 2 of a four-year, $94.5 million contract signed in the 2023 offseason.

In 31 games this season, Johnson is averaging 19.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists in 32.4 minutes. Johnson is also shooting 43.2 percent on three-pointers and is a career 39.7 percent shooter from distance. Johnson turns 29 in March.

The Golden State Warriors and Memphis Grizzlies have also been strongly linked with a trade for Johnson, who is believed to be on the block as the Nets rebuild. Brooklyn is said to be seeking multiple first round picks for Johnson.

Huerter or Derozan would be the likely salary pieces.

Then it comes down to the compensation in terms of picks/young players. The Kings only really have Keegan Murray. Devon Carter seems like a good prospect but he's injured and hasn't played. They have 3 tradable 1sts (27-29-31). I don't know if Cam Johnson is moving the needle enough for them to dig into their future for.

If its Huerter/Carter/27FRP and a future pick swap, would that be enough?

Sabonis/Lyles
Johnson/Murray
Derozan/Murray
Monk/Ellis
Fox/Monk

That feels like a slight upgrade but still doesn't put them in the next tier of teams. Still a shallow team. Still doesn't give them a ton of room to get better for the future and you'd be pushing Murray into a bench role. Maybe you move Derozan to the bench instead?

What’s he’s going to take Murray’s spot in the starting lineup? Then the best defender would be fix. The problems this team have had are about executing on Defense. There aren’t enough shots to add Cam Johnson

If the Kings are sending Keegan, Grizz may have some interest in him as the third team.

I feel like if that were the case, he'd already have been traded. The Nets aren't in any dire need to trade him right now. He's on a fair contract pretty much through his prime.

I think thats why he won't be traded. I agree the nets want more. He's had a good start to the season, but once you start getting into 2-3 assets thats like Dejounte Murray/Jrue Holiday borderline all star player packages. He's still a role player

Maybe I'm just really out of touch with the modern nba, but is 20/5/5 really role player numbers?

Ed: 20/4/3 but still
