BKN—DET—UTA then BKN—MIA

Post#1 » by SkyHook » Sat Jan 4, 2025 2:35 am

Trade #1
BRK trades Russell + 2027 SRP (BKN/DAL), receives Eubanks.
DET trades Fontecchio, receives Russell.
UTA trades Eubanks, receives Fontecchio + 2027 SRP (BKN/DAL).

Nets free up the necessary room under the first apron in order to facilitate trade #2. Trade #1 can work without Utah, but including them frees up more apron room.
Pistons get a serviceable replacement for Ivey on an expiring deal.
Utah brings back a familiar face and picks up a minor asset.

Trade #2
BKN trades Simmons + 2025 FRP (NYK) + 2025 FRP (MIL), receives Butler

Nets make their "big game hunting" move early.
Miami salvages their current situation with a large expiring plus two immediate FRPs and greatly reduces this year's tax. (With an additional move they could get under it completely.)

Would do with a couple of good seconds if nothing better comes along.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

If bkn is going for butler, might as well get Ingram also.

No argument on value, but if Brooklyn does this it is the height of stupidity in teambuilding. Don't like it for Detroit, Fontecchio is a more impactful player than Russell even if he never sees the court.

Absolutely horrendous for Brooklyn. Why would they give up picks for a 35 year old Butler given their current state as a rebuilding team? If they really wanted Butler, they can foolishly max him out this summer and keep the picks. They don't want Butler.

I'm in the minority of Brooklyn fans who are in favor of adding Butler this offseason.

But even I would easily decline this deal. Wanting to sign him into capspace is very different than wanting to give 2 1sts in trade for him. Besides, getting Jimmy to BRK now would either mean ruining our (barely surviving) tank efforts, or sitting him DND-Rest for the remainder of the season. Either way, it defeats the point of the trade for the Nets.

BK would have done this in 2019 not 2025.

If Detroit doesn't get any offers for their cap space involving decent picks then I'm open to this. Fontecchio has been underwhelming this season and his two year contract isn't quite the bargain it initially seemed. And Russell would help keep us afloat this season given we may not see Ivey again.
