Re: Trade Talk (Part 16): Early Season Anxiety Edition
Structured as 2 separate trades:
MIN In: Norman Powell, Jonas Valanciunas, Nikola Jovic
MIN Out: Randle, Leonard Miller
MIA IN: Randle, Terrence Mann, Hyland
MIA Out: Butler, Jovic
LAC In: Butler, Pat Baldwin
LAC Out: Powell, PJ Tucker, Mann, Hyland, 2nd round pick
Was In: PJ Tucker, Leonard Miller, 2nd round pick
Was Out: Valanciunas, Pat Baldwin Jr
First trade to avoid the aggregation and avoid having to cut players for roster spots:
MN In: Heavily Protected Was 2nd (sent back to Was in the 2nd trade)
LAC In: Baldwin
WAS in: Miller
We add a 2nd to Washington if necessary.
Also possible that Was eats Hyland's salary (have TPE to absorb).
Miami comes out worst but they also have the least leverage right now.
They replace Butler's defense with Mann and his scoring with Randle.
Was gets value out of Valanciunas.
LAC roll the dice pairing crazy Jimmy with Harden and Kawhai to give them one last shot at winning
Wolves get Powell who always kills us and is having a great season.
We add Valanciunas as a backup to Gobert who can actually function offensively and defend beefy centers and is locked up on a bargain contract. (and gives us a fallback option if we decide to trade Rudy next summer).
Also get Jovic as a developmental stretch 4 who can backup Naz for the time being and potentially replace him if he leaves.
Powell has a highly positive contract, and if we wanted to cut salary next summer would be very easy to trade and get value for.
Bringing Washington in also allows us to fold Jovic into the main trade.
Salary matching him as a separate trade is a bit problematic as a 2nd apron team, if we still had KBD's contract that would have worked.

I would need to dig into this more, but you probably trade NAW as soon as you make this deal. With Powell and DDV you are gonna be super log jammed at wings. Jovic and Minott will compete for minutes, and I don’t know who wins. JV as a backup to Rudy works well, but I am fearful of the PG situation this season. Under different circumstances I would say trade DDV and keep NAW, but Powell makes 19 and JV is 10 next year. Which means DDV’s cost controlled contract is better for us.
Next years rotation
Dilly/Mike/Newton (as a two way,)
Ant/Powell/TSJ
Jaden/DDV/TSJ
Naz/Minott or Jovic/Minott or Jovic
Rudy/JV/Garza
Moving NAW for a PG prospect from 23 or 24 makes sense, and you might decide to also move Jovic.
I doubt the other teams are down for this, but it is interesting.

Re: Trade Talk (Part 16): Early Season Anxiety Edition
Powell is a pretty dynamic scorer from the guard position you would have to think that would help out Ant.
The fit and rotations would get interesting but it is intriguing to think about.

I don’t know how much Ant and Powell play together. You could go a small ball lineup DDV/Powell/Ant/Minott/Naz for stretches. But overall I think Ant probably benefits from the current starting lineup with Naz replacing Randle. When Rudy sits you can use JV as a spacing big (not a huge threat, but cannot leave him wide open,) and that opens some extra space as well.

Re: Trade Talk (Part 16): Early Season Anxiety Edition
MN In: DeAndre Hunter, Nikola Jovic, David Roddy
MN Out: Randle
MIA In: Randle, Bojan Bogdanovic
MIA Out: Butler, Jovic
ATL In: Butler
ATL Out: Hunter, Bogdanovic, Roddy
In a separate Pre-Trade the Wolves send Leonard Miller to ATL for a 2nd round pick to avoid roster size issues.
Hunter has really improved this year and is intriguing as a switchable smallball stretch 4.
I guess this one boils down to how Miami feels about Randle and Bogdanovic's contract, and how Atlanta feels about adding a 35 year old Jimmy Butler and going into the luxury tax.

Re: Trade Talk (Part 16): Early Season Anxiety Edition
If Randle is traded, I think the best fitting criteria would be
1. #2 scorer. Ant needs help with double teams. Rudy can’t score if people don’t pass to him. Jaden is inconsistent scorer
2. Consolidated talent. We have eight rotation players, and want minutes for Dillingham and Minott
3. Either a PG or a big. We have enough SG’s that we try to shove into different positions
4. Expiring or short term money. Must be $33 mil or less for CBA reasons
5. Some rebounding help for Rudy would be nice. I love Jaden, but I don’t think he’s a rebounder.
So it looks to me that we need a Julius Randle that isn’t Julius Randle. Maybe Julius Randle can be that guy.

Re: Trade Talk (Part 16): Early Season Anxiety Edition
Rudy can't score unless people throw him a perfect lob pass or set him up for a wide open dunk.
And even that can get sketchy.
When you need that much help to be a functional offensive player you are an incredible burden on your teammates.

1. Naz Reid
2. Trade NAW away, keep Naz, you already move Randle, now you have 6 guys plus who you bring in. Development also takes time. You don’t need Dilly playing this year if you bring in someone who can hold things down with Mike. Dilly can still grow and develop in the G and gym where he belongs.
3. We need a PG and a C, but that doesn’t mean we cannot make a second move if a great opportunity comes up in a first move. If we could get a Norman Powell and JV for Randle and then move Jovic and NAW for a PG and pick that would work quite well. It just depends on the market for Randle.
4. 100%.
5. Jaden is up to 4.7 rebounds per game. That number will go up based on what I am seeing. Might not happen tomorrow, but Jaden is improving.

Play jaden at the position he should have been all along, pf, and he'll get more rebounds.

Jaden can guard a Durant when he needs to, but how many Wolves can do so much damage to Booker and Murray in the playoffs? Jaden is a defensive unicorn. The problem is on offense we treat Jaden like Norman Powell or Grayson Allen, when he is much more like DDR in that he thrives in the mid range. We also never post him up when guarded by a small. You think opposing teams don’t exploit mismatches against Mike? Harrison Barnes had never been so happy to exploit a size difference and play inside.

He averaged 6/game in December, and had 8 in his first January game.
It might be happening.

I was so pissed a couple years back when Wiggins said in an interview (this is paraphrasing,) “It just occurred to me I should rebound more.” The idea that he could have been doing when a Wolf and decided not to drove me nuts. Jaden said something kind of similar a while back, and I know it is more complicated, but it still is maddening. Jaden has the tools, and I think getting more rebounds and finding more ways to contribute outside of shooting will actually improve his confidence and thus his shooting percentage.

The General is afraid to even come to Minnesota as a road player. Imagine him coming out to TC fans in a Wolves city edition jersey. I am pretty sure he would get more boos than Miles Bridges after the DV charges or Giddey after the pedophilia accusations.

Re: Trade Talk (Part 1[emoji239[emoji2392]]): Early Season Anxiety Edition
I'd say that MIN might need another shooter, who can score 20PPG. And since MIN already have Donte who is a comboguard on bargain contract, the most logical choice would be upgrade at PF/SF aka comboforward, backup C or full sized PG. I don't want another scorer who can shoot, I want a shooter who can score.

Not legal now, but will be by trade deadline.
NAW + DET FRP for Andrew Nembhard.
Nembhard's extension only kicks in next year (and it doesn't seem to be a poison pill), and his salary is probably similar to NAW's next contract.
The 1st is there for the risk that NAW doesn't re-sign with IND when Nembhard is locked for 3 more years.
Both players are in the same range value-wise, but the fit is probably better with each other team.
MIN get a young secondary playmaker who can play next to ANT.
IND get a 40% 3&D connector, perfect to play with Haliburton.
