Butler to Memphis

Post#1 » by Kalamazoo317 » Sat Jan 4, 2025 5:54 pm

A team I haven't seen mentioned in the Butler sweepstakes that could make a lot of sense is Memphis. IMO their championship window is right now, and that's the type of team that should be making a move for Butler.

Brandon Clarke, Luke Kennard, John Konchar, and Marcus Smart for Butler works salarywise. Clarke and Smart feel like Heat players and Kennard's $9.2 million come off the books after this year, so they save a bit of money without taking any real "bad" money back. Smart and Clarke feel moveable as needed. Maybe Memphis throws in some light draft compensation?

For the Grizz, they lose some depth, but they have a big four of Morant, Bane, Butler, and JJJ to try to compete for real.

Butler looks like a better/same/worse version of Smart based on their profiles, doesn’t he?

Not even close IMO. Butler is by far the better player. If the Grizzlies don't want to invite the drama into the organization, I get it, but Smart isn't in Jimmy's league.

Their definitely needs to be draft compensation. This is a bunch of role players. No young talent... Nothing...

I don’t think Memphis is willing to pay that kind of tax for 3 straight years. And they owe value in OP. Even just the 2025 first…something. Don’t think you trade for Jimmy unless you plan on extending him obviously. So I don't think Memphis is a realistic destination.

Probably a bad idea, but I think you trade Bane+salary and get Butler and get value back..

Memphis will not give real assets for a four months rental

Assuming Butler is happy to extend with MEM and they are happy paying him (and the tax), I think it make sense. I think they will need to add a bit more though, maybe swap Konchar with Aldama or some other youngish player and some light draft capital.

I'm glad you brought this up because I don't think many people realize that the Grizzlies haven't paid the luxury tax since 2005.

They've had a great start to the year by relying on their talent, depth, and some creative coaching. They don't really need Butler at the expense of multiple rotation players, team chemistry, and the tax.

Agree. I’d add.. Some tax? Definitely worth it. 2026-2027ish having four max contracts? Doubt it

Talent of Jimmy is a question itself but we would be depleting our depth for a guy that is a malcontent. Small markets don't trade for Malcontents. Unless Ja/Jaren/Bane are good with this I would t touch it.

Also easily could be a rental but if we swing like this it would be for KD this summer once Booker is traded to Houston.

That's disgustingly awful for Muami. Better off letting him walk for nothing

Memphis just jumped in the odds market. But yeah, other than Bane I don’t see salaries that work 1 to 1. They would need to figure out a third team and add some draft capital.

If the price is right I could see Memphis pouncing, but that's a big if.

By "nothing," do you mean the $52M he's owed for next season?

Well whether he opts out or not, that Memphis package is a load of nothing.

The only way this makes sense is if Memphis includes Bane.

Heat want to be competitive and don't want contracts + end of bench + picks

Also makesmore sense for Memphis going forward, because they can afford their roster without going into heavy tax and Jimmy does raise their ceiling, while Bane is more of a floor raiser.

Don't even know if Miami really would want his contract, with how much games Bane has been missing in the last years.

I recant my previous post

Jimmy gets us at least to the conference finals and teaches our big 3 how to win. Jaren and Ja need a guy legitimately better than them to motivate them and Jimmy is all of that.

Smart/BC/Luke/Jitty for Jimmy/Burks would be a great deal for the Grizz. (Deal may have to include a third team like New Orleans to add Zion or BI to Miami)

Worse case Jimmy declines his option this summer and we have more than enough money to sign Santi and can use the Mle in a signing or trade. Lastly get off a lot of neutral at best money.

Love the target for memphis. I think about that lakers series a few years back. Grizzlies were 2 seed but got absolutely punked. Jimmy isn't letting that happen. This takes them from pretenders to contenders
