I had a really nice in-depth version of this post, but my internet page crashed on my computer. So now you all get the Abridged version from my phone!
Brian Windhorst and Tim Bontemps reported last week that the Brooklyn Nets are planning to pursue two maximum salary players with their cap space this summer. This would seem to indicate a win now move after 1 year of rebuilding. Are you in favor of this quick relaunch? I know we're wary of these instant fixes, as evidenced by the KC/Pierce trade and the Scary Hours era. This time around, we wouldn't be staying from scratch or surrendering all of our youth.
However, in order to open up to Max salary slots, we would either have to trade one of Claxton or Johnson, or renounce the restricted free agent rights to Thomas Sharpe and Williams. As much as I would hate to lose the youngsters with nothing in return, it makes more sense to keep our cost-controlled front Court if we're bringing in other win now players. And bringing in 2 difference makers softens the blow.
Imagine this scenario:
1) we draft Khaman Maluach, JT Toppin, Boogie Fland and Kam Jones with our four 2025 1st round picks.
2) we sign JIMMY BUTLER to a 3yr, $120mil deal. It's a gamble, seeing as he's 35 and not the most durable. Still, I think the reward is worth the risk for the potential upside of even 1 All-NBA season. He takes a pay cut after opting out of $52mil. But I think he wants the long-term security of multiple Seasons that Miami Is unwilling to give.
3) we sign FRED VAN VLEET to a 4yr, $120mil deal. He's 30, he's short and he's not an efficient shooter. But he's an elite defender, a great floor general and has championship experience. Houston may keep him from hitting the open market because he's on a team option. But, they just paid Green and Sengun big money, and are preparing extensions for Tari and Jabari this summer. They also have Sheppard and Thompson ready to take on bigger playmaking roles, so I see the Rockets letting FVV walk.
Well probably fill in the roster around the edges with minimum veterans, but for now it looks like this:
Van Vleet, Butler, Johnson, Clowney, Claxton
Fland, Whitehead, Wilson, Toppin, Maluach
I think this team could compete for a top 4 seed immediately, with room to grow organically. Some would argue that we should sign or trade for younger guys, and maybe we do. Instead of Jimmy, would you prefer trading capspace and a future 1st round pick for Zion? Instead of FVV, do we sign Aldama to a large offer sheet, and hope that Memphis doesn't match? Use your imagination, and let me know in the comments and with your vote how you would like Sean Marks to proceed.

I would not be happy if all this rebuilding was for a 35 year old Jimmy Butler.

Who would you target with our capspace this offseason? Give me some specific names please, if you know which players are free agents this summer.

This would be a horrific offseason. I'm all for star chasing, but Butler+FVV would be not be it. I wouldn't focus on signing to max FAs, especially this summer, where the FA class is weak. You're either signing one & trading for one or trading for two. In terms of FAs that may be worth pursuing, I'd look at Kuminga or Ingram (at the right price point) or Turner (if we move Claxton).

Re: Clean Sweep 2: are you in?
Absolutely not ! We need to tank and get the best possible pick, we can also package the other picks for a better pick on somebody the nets really like. One thing about Marks, he's been solid at drafting and I trust him in the scouting department. I think we need to tank for a guy like Ace Bailey, I think he's thee guy. But there is really good talent all around this draft so we need to walk away with at least 3 good prospects.
This free agent class is trash and I wouldn't spend any significant money in FA yet. I would sign some solid mid level vets to teach the youngins the right way. And take some flyers on players that hasn't gotten much playing time in the league yet. I would also take back other teams bad salaries for draft picks. We should get the best possible package for Cam Johnson by the trade deadline. I would re sign Cam Thomas since we'll have a lot of cap space and we need to hit the salary floor and he's been with us for years. We just need to stay the course.
There is no rush to be a playoff team now. We have a bunch of picks and assets, we need to stay the course and build the right way like OKC. Draft smart and let the young guys grow while playing together.

Not throwing away the hard earned cap space for another cap space disaster. Not super interested in any of the free agents. If Khris Middleton or Julius Randle wound up on this team for cheap id be entertained but I don't think any of them bring us even into the playoffs.ecuhus1981 wrote:bubonicphoniks wrote:I would not be happy if all this rebuilding was for a 35 year old Jimmy Butler.

Need to draft and develop before even thinking about big splash signings.

No way. Give me a slow rebuild and home grown start for once. I'm tired of the quick fixes. It doesn't work.

If we let Cam Thomas leave and sign two aging stars to put around our young picks I think we are making a big mistake.

Re: Clean Sweep 2: are you in?
the only guys id consider trading for in buying moves this summer are giannis and fox.
otherwise let marks use all the picks. if you want to signed kuminga or something like that as an RFA im open to that, especially if they've already moved CamJ.

We are in too deep to turn back now. It sounds like we are getting offers on Cam J. I am okay with the tank route unless we could somehow get a Luka or Giannis type .

I think we should target Giannis and Luka in Summer of 2026.
Trading expiring Simmons and others to take on money next year for draft capital is the way to go while we develop the young guys.
Cam Thomas, Clowney, and Whitehead are the only players that should be untouchable but we might have a couple other guys on the roster now who can stick around.
