I still don’t think Dallas is a realistic destination because I don’t believe the new ownership group is willing to live over the 2nd apron for 3+ years.
But if Luka and Kai like the idea and the ownership is open to extending Butler (and paying Kyrie) you do this deal.
With this trade, Dallas breaks even to a cent I think, so some late night math on my part, but next year Dallas cap situation would be
175.5 mil $
with Luka, Lively, Marshal, Highsmith, N. Richards, K. Johnson, Hardy, Omax Prosper under contract along Irving player option at 44 milion and Jimmy at 49 milion (10 players) and Grimes unsigned.
That leaves them 33 milion below the 2nd apron and if Irving and Butler get new contracts starting at 54 milion, it leaves them 17 milion - maybe Irving and Jimmy take 1.5 mil less, so it is round 20.
Grimes could get some 13 - 15 milion (he is RFA, which makes it easier for Mavs to keep it lower), which leaves Dallas with 11 signed players.
If they are left with some 7 milion under the apron, it should be enough room to add three players on min deal (something like a veteran minimum, along two converted two way guys / undrafted players) to reach mandatory 14 players.
It is tight and maybe getting Irving and Jimmy to forgo 1.5 mil starting salary is a long shot (although, I think it could be done), but there might be a way to stay below 2nd apron for at least one season.
As I said, late night math, so I might have missed something, but it could be doable.
Usually new owners want to make a profit when they've just bought the team, that is true.
But with this team being a contender (hopefully) and them looking to endear themself in order to get that alleged casino complex off the ground, who knows
