Is there a single Beal trade that makes sense?

Post#1 » by dcstanley » Mon Jan 6, 2025 1:51 pm

Let's say Beal waives his NTC for any and all teams. Are there any takers? Do the Suns have enough assets to incentivize a team to take on his contract?

Not going to say it is impossible but seems very unlikely.

I don't think so to both questions.

Ironically, the Wizards kind of make sense:

WAS in: Beal, Bol, all of the Suns tradeable FRPs
PHX in: Poole and Kuzma

Of course, the 2nd apron is a huge obstacle

The first question is, would some team with albatross contracts decide they'd rather have Beal's instead of their own.

Pretty sure Chicago keeps LaVine. Pretty sure Minnesota keeps Randle. Pretty sure Washington prefers Poole. Pretty sure GSW prefers Wiggins. Pretty sure Miami prefers getting off Butler's salary and I don't see them doing Rozier + Robinson either.

Three teams that might be interested, though:
Sixers: if the Paul George era is already over, this swap makes a little bit of sense. Beal might even waive his no-trade clause. Beal is still third banana but Maxey is more of a PG than Booker.

Jazz: They could part with Collins + Sexton for the last scraps of Phoenix's future assets.

Pelicans + Pistons: Detroit needs firepower next to Cade and the Pelicans have $60m/year invested in McCollum and Murray. I could see Beal to NOP, one of McCollum or Murray to DET, the other to PHX, with THJ also heading to PHX.

For a second, I was thinking Memphis Butler package minus the picks, but 3 years is a lot to be THAT invested...

Lakers can trade Rui, Christie, Reaves, Vincent (detroit could just take Christie).

The side piece to this is Beal's NTC is making Miami disinterested in him in a trade. Can he permanently remove it if traded? If so that might be the chess match happening.

A 2031 1st and a few 2nds. Should be relatively high value if Phoenix is willing to part with it.

This, plus any Beal deal would cost more than just eating 2 more years of Beal and trying to move him as an expiring with an agreement to waive him/buy him out.

Grant and timelord for Suns 31.

Don't know why Beal waives his ntc. Maybe if Portland agreed to waive him.

How does waiving work with 3 years left? Does it automatically dead the money in each year it is owed?

tooooskies Pelicans idea perhaps helps:

Heat get BI, McCollum, JRE
upgrade at guard, BI replaces a lot of what Butler can do on offense though obviously not on defense. JRE is useful.

Suns trade Beal, FRP get Butler

Clear that Beal ain't working, so bring in the Butler to clean the mess. Durant and Booker are both good off and on the ball, so Butler can run his triangle style post ups and create for them just as they can for him.

Pelicans trade BI, McCollum, JRE
get Beal, FRP

the pick is the prize, high variance. Beal can either re-hab his value or just be a co-1 option with Zion always out and Murray being the co-star. rozier is likely easier to move than McCollum due to the lower salary number, so he could be dealt as a positive asset within 30 days.

Anything around Murray make sense? Not as overpaid, but his deal is a lot longer.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I was thinking something along these lines (though my mind went to Simons instead of Timelord), but I wasn't sure what other assets Suns could include. Is it just the 31? If so, I don't think it makes sense for Portland. Especially if Beal is waived, essentially making it so we can never move that contract, even when it is a large expiring.

Do you think Memphis would have interest in Beal? I find that very hard to believe. Much rather keep our depth here than take on Beal who would be a backup to Bane and neither cannot really play up in position. Butler plays the 3/4 where will have more minutes available and a skillset is more complimentary of our other stars that is why we might have some interest in him.

This assumes the Pelicans can't get a 1st for Ingram by himself, and maybe his value really has dropped this low, but I think it's easier to rent him than Butler.

I think so? When DET waived Blake Griffin, IIRC his money was still on the DET books as he played out his career in BKN/BOS

To answer your question: I'm with JROY, while it's always possible, it's hard to imagine any team that would want to fit Beal on to their cap sheet given his cost/production. Maybe PHI in the summer if they don't make the playoffs and PG13 is selected as the scapegoat?

I would gladly move Jerami Grant + Robert Williams III for Beal and the 2031 UNP - but I dont see Bradley waiving his NTC to be stranded in Portland.

PDX also likely would have to move Simons assuming they are unwilling to pay a truckload of money to waive Beal.

I have two thoughts about how the Suns can get rid of Beal without just running out the clock on his contract.

The first thought is that whoever is getting Beal will either see him as the piece of the puzzle that puts them over the top. Any championship contender could talk themselves into Beal's scoring getting them that edge they need to win.

The second thought is that the Suns will have to pay to get rid of Beal. In the absence of draft picks that means unless some team falls in love with Tyus Jones they will have to part with either Durant or Booker to get assets from a third team that they can use to pay whoever takes Beal.

What I am not sure about is whether the top five teams Celtics, Thunder, Knicks, Cavaliers, or Grizzlies are the team for Beal.

It seems more likely that someone on the outside looking in with a shorter window such as the Mavericks, Lakers, or Nuggets might be the teams that might not see a better chance at a chip.

There is also the possibility that an aging team such as the Clippers, Warriors, or Bucs gamble on Beal being a better long term asset than a big name on their roster now.

The Suns are in a very bad position here and keeping Booker happy over the next few years will be easier said than done.

I think they already need to rip off the band aid and move KD as I do not see him getting them a chip.

They either reload around Booker or look towards the rebuild.

If they want to keep booker perhaps they just move KD for the best deal they can get and keep Beal around until his contract is less toxic.

how does the can't aggregate salary in trades part of the 2nd apron work? Does this mean you can only trade 1v1 or could Beal be traded for two guys that add up to 50 mil?

If you need to find a single guy to swap him for that makes 50 mil that is going to be difficult.

But maybe something around the idea of Lavine to the Suns, Beal to the Nets, Ben Simmons to the Bulls
