DET - SAC

Post#1 » by bpcox05 » Mon Jan 6, 2025 2:50 am

—————————

DET GETS: Kevin Huerter, Jordan McLaughlin, Doug McDermott, & 2029 SAC 2nd
DET GIVES: Tobias Harris
WHY FOR DET? The Pistons sell off one of their vets for a future 2nd round pick while also saving $4.4 mil this year and $8.6 mil next year. Huerter can also help eat up some minutes since Ivey went down with his injury and still space the floor for Cunningham at a high level.

PG - Thompson / Sasser / McLaughlin / Ivey
SG - Hardaway / Beasley / Moore
SF - Huerter / Holland / McDermott
PF - Cunningham / Fontecchio / Klintman
C - Duren / Stewart / Reed

—————————

SAC Gets: Tobias Harris
SAC Gives: Kevin Huerter, Jordan McLaughlin, Doug McDermott, & 2029 SAC 2nd
Why for SAC? The Kings have a log jam at the guard spot now that Carter is back healthy. They move Huerter for some needed SF/PF help. Harris can space the floor for their paint heavy scorers while also helping bolster their bench scoring. He’s also not a liability on defense and gives them another body to throw at someone when Murray is off the floor.

PG - Fox / Monk
SG - Ellis / Carter / Jones
SF - DeRozan / Harris
PF - Murray / Lyles / Crowder
C - Sabonis / Len / Robinson

Can Ausar not defend PGs and can Cunningham not defend PFs? Obviously Cunningham is the “PG” offensively but I assign positions based on who you’re defending.

Cade cannot defend 95% of starting NBA PFs

Neither Huerter or Harris has been providing spacing at a high level this year. I think Detroit stick with what they have. They have THJ and Beasley at SG already

Using your 95% figure, you’re saying there are only 2 other teams in the league that start a PF that Cunningham is capable of defending? Are you sticking with that?

It's not a matter of whether he "could". He wouldn't, and he shouldn't. This is a bad trade proposal. Detroit is just at the salary floor. They don't want/need to save 4 million this season.

See now that’s a more reasonable take. I took exception with GreekAlex saying he “can’t” defend 95% of starting PFs. I don’t believe that to be true at all.

He’s probably similar to how I feel about Keegan Murray. Yeah he can guard PFs, but his best position to defend is SF. I’m sure Cunningham is similar in that aspect.

Without going over each roster, when teams like Golden state go small and start Wiggins at PF, Cade could theoretically guard him and I’m sure there’s other one-off scenarios that are similar but nothing about it is optimal or sustainable.

I hope that helped you.

And I’m not sure if your last question was rhetorical or we’re playing “deal or no deal” but yes, that’s my final answer and I’m “sticking with that”.

Well then you’re just wrong. Cunningham can defend more than 2 starting PFs in this league. Hell there are 2 starting PFs in the state of California alone that he can defend (Keegan Murray and Derrick Jones Jr.).

The starting PFs he’s going to struggle against are the bigger, stronger PFs (LeBron, Giannis, Zion, Randle, Jackson Jr., etc.) but there aren’t 27 teams in the league that start one of those players at PF.

I don’t view this as a right or wrong thing but if you’re hyper-focusing on my 95% stat, you can pat yourself on the back and be “right”.

I think you missed my larger point that rolling Cade out against starting 4’s isn’t “optimal or sustainable.”

Not optimal because he’s best suited to cover wings and not sustainable because the physicality would impact other areas of his game.

At the end of the day, if the Pistons matched up Cade against PFs on a regular basis, I think it would lead to him being involved in increased physical play, wear him down and decrease team success.

I don't see this from Detroit end at all.

I personally don't want Tobias either.

I prefer to just find the right trade rather than shuffle a piece to shuffle. End of day I want huerter gone no matter what but Tobias doesn't feel like a long term guy.

Tobias has been underwhelming this season but he does seem to provide an important vet presence. Detroit are currently on a bit of roll and this has the potential to disrupt team chemistry so would be a pass.

The defending power forward thing was weird. But also on many teams that player is a spacer and their wings are more physical.

Plus every team switches in this pick and roll league.

Which is why position when used should be about offensive role outside of your center.

There was a poll on the Pistons board about which brand of a bag of chips we would trade Harris for.

IIRC "Lays" was the winning answer, but I value Tobi's vet presence, so I voted for "Miss Vickie's"

That said: every deal with Detroit needs to be evaluated on the money first. If we are getting picks for using up cap space, that's ideal. Deals that save salary this year can't be acted on until we have used up our cap space because we are at the salary floor.

The deal is a no go because of the money factors.

The optimal target would be to sell our cap space (this years) in order to get our protected first back that is owed to Minnesota.

It might not be as simple as that but if we took a deal that ate into next year’s cap or helped Minnesota facilitate a larger deal, it may be doable.

I think it's just not a clear upgrade in any sense for Detroit so it doesn't make sense to do. Tobias has been stepping up a bit with Ivey out, his leadership has been valuable, and he plays a position that we need filled on the roster, whereas what we'd get back in this deal wouldn't.

Detroit isn’t deep in the front court at all. Duren, Stewart, Harris, and playing Ausar down there because he’s a rebounding machine. After that, it’s BBall Paul and nothing else.

Tobias has not been great, but replacing his minutes with Paul Reed isn’t going to work. It’s the same reason all these Stewart trades we see on here don’t work, either. The team is trying to win.
