Butler to HOU; Sheppard & Smith Jr to MIA

Post#1 » by I_Love_This_Game!! » Mon Jan 6, 2025 3:14 pm

HOU trade / MIA receive: Reed Sheppard, Jabari Smith, Jr., Dillon Brooks, Steven Adams, Jeff Green
MIA trade / HOU receive: Jimmy Butler, Terry Rozier, Alec Burks

Why this trade works for the Rockets: They are winning games right now, but will most likely not go far in the playoffs. They have too many young players and not enough star vets. That's where Butler comes in. He can help them get through the first round and possibly the second. Rozier, would be a nice addition coming off the bench too. They still keep their best young players too in Thompson, Sengun, Green and Eason. Their new lineup:

PG...VanVleet...Rozier
SG...Green...Burks
SF...Butler...Whitmore
PF...Thompson...Eason
C...Sengun...Londale

Why this trade works for the Heat: This trade enables them to add two young, talented players to their core of Bam, Herro, Jovic, Ware, and JJJ. Smith Jr. has not broken out, but even at his current level of play, he would bring defense and size to the team. Sheppard is raw for sure, but he could become the PG of the future for this team. Brooks can add some value, but not much. Adams and Green are salary throw-ins. Their new lineup:

PG...Herro...Sheppard
SG...Robinson...JJJ
SF...Brooks...Highsmith
PF...Smith Jr....Jovic
C...Adebayo...Ware...Adams

What do you think?
My Dream Team
PG...Magic Johnson...Steph Curry
SG...Michael Jordan...Kobe Bryant
SF...Larry Bird...Elgin Balyor
PF...Tim Duncan...Hakeem Olajuwon
C...Kareem Abdul-Jabbar...Wilt Chamberlain

I don't think Butler can pull either young player, but at most one. This would be the most trade value Butler has ever garnered, does that make any sense to you?

One of the more lopsided trades I've read on these boards, you'd be lucky to get one of those young pieces let alone three and dumping Rozier. Rockets GM chokes with laughter before hanging up.

That's an insane overpay. There is no team giving out 3 assets for Jimmy Butler. Burks and Terry aren't moving the needle compared to what Cam and Holiday do in their role. This completely warps what makes the Rockets so great, and that's their paint presence and versatile defensive looks. Just no, no, and no.

Heat fans need to forget about dumping Rozier or Duncan in a Butler trade. It's difficult enough for a trade partner to salary match on Butler and adding bad contracts to him just makes the entire idea unattractive from a trade partner's perspective.

Butler doesn't have that kind of value...

Good googly moogly that's a one sided trade. No way.

Bro who are you talking to "HeAt FaNs" when OP is from IL. It's some wild nephews of other teams making these crazy offers. We want cap space so we're gonna get something for him but what no one knows.

People really don’t understand Dillon is the leader on that team.

I don't see this for Houston unless they're going to make more trades and go all in but even then this is an overpay

Green + Londale + Tate + Adams + Holiday would probably be the salary base here, that is ~$40.7 million. Then include a young player that fits the Heat (Smith seems like a nice fit & then Eason can slide into a starting role) and players coming back from Miami to make it work for roster size. So ... that's:

Smith + expiring filler (Londale/Tate/Adams/Holiday) for Butler + filler for roster size (Burks/Richardson/Love?). That works on Spotrac.

The resulting Miami starting-5 sense, stylistically:

Bam
Smith
Jacquez
Herro
Rozier

I think the deal also makes sense (and still works) with Reed instead of Smith and then Miami would have:

Bam
Jovic
Jacquez
Herro
Sheppard

Which might make more sense?

I'm not sure what, if anything, Houston needs to add for value.

If the Rockets offered this the HEAT would be stupid not to take it. Not happening though. Waaaaay too lopsided in the HEAT favor.

People are EXTREMELY overrating what Butler is going to fetch in a trade. He's not 30 anymore.

I do think that Houston makes as much sense as any team, but obviously not at this price.

Brooks would be the main salary back (it wouldn't be Van Vleet as Houston needs a starting PG for the rest of the season and then needs to decline his TO for payroll sanity going forward). Landale and Green as secondary salary filler. Probably Smith or Eason (whoever Houston considers more expendable) as the young value. Cheap vets (Burks, Love) and maybe a secondary young guy back to Houston.

This is a joke, right? Rafael Stone would laugh at Riley and hang up the phone if he requested this for Butler considering everyone in the league knows Jimmy is done in Miami.
