Right. When it comes to Flagg or even Harper I worry less about what position we draft for and more about competitiveness.
You draft Flagg and play him in the Deni spot: 2-4. He’s the ideal upgrade from Kuzma because he plays a similar role (face up high usage forward) except he makes the smart play every time at both ends.
If he takes minutes from Sarr, or George or Bilal, boo hoo. Sarr will have to earn them back in the weight room. George needs to find an outside shot. Bilal needs muscle as well. So does Flagg frankly. His mismatch is in will to win not athleticism.
But a good coach can devise a scheme with Flagg, Bilal, Sarr on defense preventing penetration and 2nd line rebounding from Bub. The lanky crew forces a miss, the tall guard darts into the gaps to snatch the bounce and initiate the break. Your bigs already have a head start on the outlet.
Yeah I want a Godzilla center still coming off the bench at the least. A few nights a year and the playoffs you want a matchup monster on the interior. Or a rebounding junkyard dog. But those guys are still undervalued in the draft and the FA market.
You get Flagg because every empty minute of game play and every box score negative that Kuz delivers would flip to +’s and W’s if you had a guy who could lead by smart play more than swagger. Consistency and focus. Again Flagg plays like the 4th/5th year Deni. As a teenager. And a more aggressive version. Not benchable, not shy to attack. No telling where that tops out, but he’s got a head start.
