Jon and jbk... I agree. The timing makes no sense.

If we get bounced in the 1st round, maybe we can reevaluate the roster construction in the summer but we're 30-4 currently, i say let it ride as is.

LeVert/Strus/Okoro/Niang for Butler/Love/Richardson/Burks works salary-wise, and the Cavs can add a 2031 1st, 2nds, and swaps along with Tyson, Jerome, and/or Merrill for added value.

Not sure that makes the Cavs better in the regular season, but it may optimize our playoff upside, depending on the particulars.

There are also 3-team options that could make sense if Miami wanted Ingram, Zion, LaVine, Fox, or some other available top-50 player for Butler.

Offfff 3 years ago Butler sure but man that kills our guard and wing depth. I think that's Lakers or Suns panic move that gets you older with nowhere to go after the honeymoon stage. Your bench is Wade Merril Jerome all tremendous injury concerns....you are basically all in this year not sure it's the right time for that

Depends on if Burks, Richardson, and Love have anything left in the tank— worse guys to have as 9th-12th men.
KuruptedCav wrote:No real interest in Butler. Last time a trade for an old star resulted in a ring was Clyde to Houston.

I’d expect the Cavs to hang out as a 3rd wheel on a trade facilitating with dynamic positive/neutral value contracts and siphoning value.

Arguably the last time a trade for an old star ended in a title was Jrue last year.
JujitsuFlip wrote:Yeah, count me out on a James Butler trade. Himmy Buckets has $48 million in salary... It would take Strus, Niang, Levert, and Tyson; that's an awful lot to surrender for a 35 year old rental.

I doubt it’d be a rental, but if it were, that gets the Cavs out of the 2nd apron.

Fair enough on Jrue. I didn’t think he was that old, but just checked it up. Thanks

Butler spiking the Grizzlies trade is bad enough that the NBA might have to suspend him, or at least reach out to the agent and threaten him with it.

The whole situation is lose-lose for everyone. Butler trying to force himself to the Suns and the Suns trying to force Beal to waive his NTC and who Miami has come out and said they don't want to take his albatross contract.

His value is incredibly low so I just see Miami taking an offer that doesn't burden them. Jimmy isn't a "negative" asset, especially if you treat him as a half season rental or a high value expiring contract to get out of the first apron. The problem is Butler isn't plug-and-play like Jrue Holiday has been on the Bucks and Celtics. He comes with potential fit issues bc he kinda needs the ball to be impactful.

Just finding a trade for him is hard enough and him tanking his own value is not going to help him get where he wants. I do see some team taking him for a small swing at the championship this year, but if I'm that team I am not resigning him lol

The only way I see Butler working out is something relatively insane like:

Philly Out: George
Philly In: Beal

Phoenix Out: Beal
Phoenix In: Butler

Miami Out: Butler
Miami In: Grant, Williams III

Portland Out, Grant, Williams III
Portland In: George

But I don’t see Phoenix having the collateral picks to balance Beal for Butler.

I doubt Beal waives his NTC for the 76ers.

Plus, Jimmy probably wouldn't mind ending up back in Philly, if there was a real path.

Good on Nance for signing with the 76ers, he'll probably be elevated and immediately see playing time with Drummond and Embiid out.

When he's down with Delaware, he'll see time with his former teammate, Brobley.

Edit: oh wow, Patrick McCaw is on Delaware too, forgot that dude even still hooped.

That was short lived, he's back with the Charge.

I'm watching the Buckeyes, but I just checked the score in the Knicks v. OKC and wow.

Man, Embiid is out with left knee swelling despite the fact he's barely playing. It's not looking good for the Sixers.

I've been saying it to my friends IRL... they should never have let him out there to begin with. He was obviously injured even when he was playing and the whole not playing back-to-back things turned into a PR nightmare. They should have just let him be injured and rehabbed until the all-star break and then ramped him up for the playoffs.

The biggest issue hasn't even been Embiid missing games, but that when he has played he just looks like a shell of his former self (and that PG is the same).

The problem is that if the condition is degenerative, time is not an ally. Plus, a guy like Embiid takes awhile to get into shape.

That is definitely fair, but I believe they are exacerbating the issue by letting him go out there when he's not right.

I do think that we will never see Embiid again at MVP-level. The injuries have got to linger somewhere and I think it'll be his defense.

I'm honestly just amazed that Embiid has had a NBA career, let alone winning league MVP. His contract is going to doom Phili for years.
Well at least we're not Detroit!

Philly has the most grueling schedule in the league between now and the ASB. They just lost to ORL, OKC, and NYK. They've got IND, MIL, DEN, and CLE next. Then CHI, LAL, SAC, DEN, BOS, DAL, MIA. Over that schedule, which takes them to the trade deadline, they have 5 back-to-backs. Embiid's out another week at least with swelling in his knee while trying to come back from a sprained ankle.

Philly might be 15+ games under .500 at the trade deadline, shut down their guys, and tank like crazy.

I know he got injured, but I am very surprised Franz didn't make the cut
