Pat Riley Says He Would Have Handled Things Differently With Jimmy Butler

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Fri Jan 10, 2025 1:57 pm

Miami Heat president Pat Riley was a recent guest on the LeBatard Show with Dan LeBatard. As to be expected, the Jimmy Butler situation was a major topic of discussion. When asked if he would have handled things different, had he known how it would go with Butler, Riley expressed regret in his part of the situation.

"I would have handled it differently. There's no doubt," Riley said.

In the offseason, Riley was critical of Butler and his tendency to miss game. Riley also said Butler had no room to comment on the Heat's first-round playoff loss to Boston because the veteran wing didn't play in the series.

At that same time, Riley said Butler had to find a way to play in more games. While speaking with LeBatard, Riley reiterated that players owe teams something while under contract.

"There’s a difference, be who you want to be, but in one of the great biblical terms, render onto Caesar you know what is his," Riley explained. "As players, they have to render unto the Heat really what is theirs too, and while they go out there and they do all these other things, you can’t short cut it with us. I’ve actually explained this to the players is that while you’re under contract with us, you do owe us something. Your collective bargaining agreement contract says that. So, don’t ever take that lightly and we have a very cooperative group of people."

Riley didn't notice the yellow flags, with so many injuries, that Butler wasn't involved in the Heat project. When the player doesn't want to, there's no point in insisting. No one is irreplaceable

To reference Caesar (like Riley just did) Jimmy "Crossed the Rubicon" -- there's no going back, even if Riley has regrets about saying "if you don't play, then keep your mouth shut"

Butler torched Heat culture with that "I can't play hard without my joy" nonsense -- he committed the cardinal sin in a locker room.

He's become [end of Houston/Brooklyn/Philly] James Harden, and is also now a complete hypocrite when you look at his comments from 2019:

You look at everything we have. Everything this organization has done. It just fits me, man. So, I’m happy. Miami is a place where I’m happy,” Butler said. “People overlook the fact that this was one of the places I was trying to get to, early on. For that reason. Because life isn’t always about basketball. It’s about principle. It’s about character. It’s about so many different things.

“Basketball is great here, but the people here, what they expect of you on a daily basis. The level that they hold you accountable at here, is something that I respect. It’s something that I really love — not just like, really love — because it’s about having good people and doing things the right way. Because when this basketball thing is over with, you’re still going to have to have those morals. And if you don’t have that, you’re in for a rude awakening.”

The moment Jimmy himself was the one being held accountable he lost his damn mind.

They need to find a deal ASAP and get him away from the team before their inability to hold him accountable poisons the water (AKA #HeatCulture)

This is coming from a Celtics fan who should be relishing in Miami's demise, but as a fan of the game you don't want an organization like that derailed by one selfish player whose time as a star is fast ending.
