The last time Weltman was a buyer was in 2019 when he traded for Fultz. That was during the re-tool in an ill-fated attempt to salvage the Hennigan core. I doubt he's a buyer this deadline as I think they see this as the last year of player development.

Just hold and draft Kam Jones and Broome. Mark Sears in the 2nd round. Ride with our guys. That is my favorite option, I know many people here hate it though

That is 100% what I would prefer to do as GM.

That's true...and even then, it was a buy-low salvage experiment...which, sadly, the buy-low late pick became Maxey (which I can't blame them for not foreseeing -Maxey dropped and still was better than his highest supporters ever could have guessed). Point being that even that deal was far from a "win-now" move any more than most draft picks.

We can barely find time for Jett. We’re not being on 3 rookies onto this team.

This is what I would do as well. Weltman has the long-term contracts and controllable contracts needed to field a 10 man rotation in 2027. There is a clear plan.Idiosyncratic wrote:eyriq wrote:The last time Weltman was a buyer was in 2019 when he traded for Fultz. G: Suggs/KCP/AB/Jett
F: Paolo/Franz/JI/TDS
C: Goga/WCJ
They have a team option on Cole.
Plenty of space for rookie scale contracts to fill out the rest of the bench.
I think any re-tool moves will be adjustments to that lineup. 2027 will be the last year of KCP's contract and the year that AB and Jett negotiate their extensions. They probably give AB and Jett a last hard look next season before making any re-tooling moves.

I think we just have to accept that our team is going to have less turnover than normal until we suffer a significant setback. I think that's a product of having a really successful rebuild where we've had 99th percentile draft luck.

Yes... draft Broome for the WCJ/Moe insurance.
Or if we really think long term, draft one of the Ivisic twins and hope they develop their bodies so we can have someone to throw at the really big guys in the league ( we cant seem to stop them )

I don't totally disagree with this either. Which is why I have no problem trading a 1st for someone that is worth a 1st. Would be fine moving one for a rotation player under contract for more than a season if a good fit is available for that price.
Regarding Jett, we aren't watching the practices. Decent chance Jett has just always looked overmatched and isn't playing because he hasn't been good enough, not because he's a rookie. Important to remember that Jett wasn't even good in college. The guys I would zero in on are in the TDS mold (though I have both as better prospects) as seniors who should be ready. Of course if a younger prospect falls with upside you can pivot. And of course both picks could stink. A risk I personally would be willing to take, but I understand the other side of it.
There should be a ton of minutes for the taking at the backup guard spots and backup big spots next year IMO. Having in-house options to potentially step in and start when Caldwell-Pope, Goga and Wendell expire I would argue is borderline essential with us having 3 near max players and if AB breaks out next year another potential hefty salary.
I do think there's a good chance they trade a pick though, I agree. I do not think it's essential however. I understand people disagree with that, I don't have a problem with that. The only thing I have a problem with is trading a pick for less than it's worth just because we have two. I don't think they will do that though, so not too worried.

Yeah agree. And I think people miss on the fact that they are going to have to hit on some picks to support the big 3 being expensive. They don't need to hit a star (but imagine), but they do need to hit on some role players still at least.

When you have 5 top 6 picks in 6 years you are bound to get some talent.
Weltman and Hammond arrived in 2017 and 7 years later the team is yet to win play off series (23 out of 30 nba teams have managed to do it in this period). Calling this "a really successful" anything is a bit premature.

Fox is not a realistic target for us. Im calling up Chicago again and see what they want for Coby White.

He re-tooled the Hennigan build then blew it up and rebuilt through the draft. He's drafted two franchise players and a borderline all-star. That doesn't happen very often. It's fair to call that really successful.

We def need to address PG and/or shooting before worrying about C. Suggs is not a PG and even as bad as cole has been, our offensive flow is better with him running point with some traditional pg role. Weve also seen how much better suggs plays when he is back to his natural 2.

Paolo and Franz with Suggs shouldering a small portion of the load. I don’t think we need a PG in the starting lineup.
I do think we need additional playmaking off the bench. AB can’t be the sole playmaker for the second unit. We could probably solve some of that with staggering the 1st unit but Mos doesn’t do that often.
Getting healthy for me is still most important so we can see this unit play more together. I feel like we have had a lot of internal development.

To clarify, the poison pills for F-Wagner and Suggs means they cannot be traded within this season; they are trade eligible in the off-season, but on their rookie deals for "value" purposes in salary lines (thus the "poison"; it's a cap-poison).

For me this PG conversation is the same as the C conversation; yes there are better players out there. No, the Magic cannot afford to upgrade.
Shooting is the one (and only) thing holding this team back, in my opinion. Caldwell-Pope was supposed to solve that as a starter and Anthony off of the bench. Both have failed. In a sense that this is the worst 3-pt shooting team of the last 20 years.
The shooting on this team is horrible. It is the weakest of the weak links. This "get a PG" conversation is nonsense to me until a shooting guard that can shoot is found.
That said: what trade is there that solves this? Perhaps none. So, we fans just need to pray that i) Banchero, Suggs, and F-Wagner returning opens the offense and that ii) Caldwell-Pope magically learns how to hit 4 threeballs a game.
Sink or swim: this is what playoff Magic needs.

FYI. KCP hasn't averaged more than 2.1 3's made per game in a season for his entire career. What your asking is unrealistic.

We’re 4 deep in ALLEGED 40% from 3 SGs (Suggs, KCP, Harris, Jett)…there are actually sweet-shooting combo guards that are among the most available…why settle for more spot up fails when we could easily add guys like Sexton, Simons, or even Brogdon or CJ that can shoot, handle, and pass the ball?
Something systemic going on here…all of these good shooters shooting badly. Look harder.
“Defense wins ‘ships” doesn’t look so simple when a Giannis or a Donovan or a SGA come to town and prove unstoppable. Sometimes defense keeps you in games but you need to return fire.
