DET—UTA

Post#1 » by SkyHook » Sun Jan 12, 2025 3:25 pm

https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/278726/Pistons-Considering-Pivot-Away-From-Renting-Out-Cap-Space-At-Trade-Deadline

Simple trade:

Sexton
72nd percentile EPM (89th O, 9th D)
$18,350,000 + 1 yr, $18,975,000

for

Ivey
55th percentile EPM (75th O, 19th D)
$7,977,240 + 1 yr, $10,107,163

Why?
Pistons are 1.5 games back of the 4th seed. This improves their ability to compete this season and beyond. (+4 wins on FANSPO.)

Jazz turbocharge their tank with an injured player, banking on his return the following season. (-4 wins on FANSPO.)

Could expand this to include Svi for Tech to preserve more capspace for Detroit to rent.

These guys are already comparable stat wise, and Ivey is younger and cheaper. Don't see the point. This is the type of short sighted trade the Pistons should be avoiding.

Imo Pistons shouldn’t think about trading Ivey like this. Devaluing because of injury. But I like the target.

IMO Sasser and Wendell Moore plus a protected 1st for Sexton would be the right deal. But Detroit shouldn’t trade a 1st.

Ivey is RFA, Sexton is a FA, Sexton is a better player, Ivey was breaking out before the injury and has a rare speed that still gives him potential, UTA owes value on this exchange.

What about Ivey, Collins for Sexton, Harris?

Ivey isn't even a restricted free agent. He still has a whole year left on his rookie deal.

Both Ivey and Sexton have additional year on their contracts, they become RFA/FA after next year.

I know it’s early for my rant but.. Sexton should be renegotiated and extended in September. I don’t see him as a normal free agent for Detroit or Utah (teams that can easily create 12-15m cap space this summer)..

Assuming, Sexton is happy in Utah or DetroitC, I would say that renegotiate and extend option is as valuable/more than RFA. Sexton should be a bargain contract from 2026-2029 while Ivey might be what Brooklyn/Miami/LA have to settle on overpaying in free agency.

As someone who wrongfully thought Cleveland should build around Sexton and trade Garland.. I love this for Detroit.

But I also think you can get Sexton without using Ivey and then flip Ivey once he is healthy. So that’s the route I would go. Just need to find a first round pick, or trade your own future well protected first.

Pass for DET

Before his injury, Ivey had taken a significant step forward. Not a leap, but a very good step. The flashes of brilliance on both ends were becoming more consistent, and the brain-dead "Why did he do that?!?!?" mistakes were less frequent. There's absolutely no way I'd want to sacrifice the huge potential that Ivey has.

Both ends? Did I miss where he started playing defense?

Thanks for the feedback. Mixed results, which is about what I expected.
