We forget that in this league, a team can go from SB appearance to last place, from 12-5- to 5-12.

In most re-drafts, Williams still goes #1. He showed a killer instinct at many times. His numbers, all things considered, were very good. Didn’t Peyton Manning go 1-15, first year? and the new GOAT in KC carried a clipboard his first year.

Williams has shown an exceptional work ethic, he will improve in the areas he needs to improve. He’s willing to be coached, in fact, I’m sure he really wants tough love.

With the right moves, we could flip our record. We should have won way more games this year. This is, after all, a one drive league.
Love and Nix and Hebert were mediocre. Even the OSU guy in Houston had a worse year, statistically than Williams.

We will improve the line. Next year is gonna be a good year.

The redrafts I have seen say different. Whether or not Caleb failed because of how the Bears tried to develop him. Which was different than the other QBs. The Bears may have failed the kid. And on top we are in the midst of a negative work ethic report on Caleb. Don’t believe things will get better without fundamental changes

Read on Twitter

I think there are a couple of critical errors here.

1. You’re speaking of Claeb almost on the past tense as if his career story has already been written. “The reason that Caleb failed” or “The Bears may have failed the kid”. The problem with such premise is that we’re talking about ONE SEASON. I don’t think that it’s even remotely possible to draw such conclusions. Especially in day and age where both the Jets and Browns are kicking themselves in the rear ends for jumping to such conclusions as we speak.

2. You reference Caleb’s questionable work ethic as if it’s been widely reported on both the College and NFL levels. But it hasn’t been. We’re talking about one guy that I (personally) have found to be extremely opportunistic in his reporting and it’s questionable WHO actually provided this information to him. Fleet, you’re going all in on just about anything that supports the narrative that you already believe. But you’ve gotta understand that not everybody is willing to jump in that pool with you.

So far as a re-draft goes, I’m sure that there are plenty of people that would draft all of Daniels, Nix and even Bowers ahead of him. These guys had phenomenal rookie seasons for sure. But that’s what we call classic recency bias. All of these players could go on to have better careers than Caleb. Having said all of that, the fact that THEY all had great rookie seasons doesn’t mean that Caleb had a bad one.

Just talking 2024. And those 2 narrow points that nav singh made, and I responded to because there is information to the contrary. Limited to 2024. Hence the call for needed changes in order to improve. Just read as written, don’t read into. Although my writing is pretty bad

The Niners went from SuperBowl to 6-11 and are going to blow $250 million on Brock Purdy. This is the bust-boom cycle of this league, basically. Rinse. Repeat.

It’s really pointless to argue about how good Williams is or will be. He’s our qb for probably the next 5 years (unless he’s pure trash while on his rookie contract)

All that matters now is building a great roster and getting a coach that will put that roster and Williams in the best position to succeed.

Daniels and Kingsbury look pretty good right now. Kingsbury is not a bad fallback plan if BJ doesn’t work out. We could do worse, and certainly less experienced.

With how the rookie QB salary works if lets say Williams gets hurt or plays really bad next year and the Bears have the #1 pick they can easily dump him for Manning.

Jayden danials has been good I’ll give him that but he’s not the guy the media is making him seem like cause how that work out for Jordan love even though Jayden danials is better then he is also he’s playing in a friendly offense scheme that’s he’s used to aswell as he was more prepared right away unlike Caleb besides that just get Caleb with the right coaches and a better OL can do more and will be better it’s up to poles to get it right or he’s gone mext seasons schedule is the test for Caleb and hopefully Ben Johnson and a good offensive staff with a much better OL improved Defensive Lineman & DC staff they could get 10 wins and a wildcard game to get things going

I wouldn't say Ross Tucker is any kind of an expert on QBs. I'm not even the biggest Williams guy but even i know Daniels isn't better. Daniels had the perfect situation for him this year and Williams had one of the worst and they still put up similar numbers. The fact Daniels made the pro bowl is kind of a joke.

Our biggest mistake by far was the o-line. Daniels had light years to pass the ball. Bo Nix as well. Our o-line isn’t the worst but it’s not the best for a young rookie.

Jayden has had himself quite a rookie season. But so too did Stroud. Love also had a great first season as a starter. This year was a tougher go for both guys. Hindsight takes such as these don’t always make as much sense as we’d like to think they do. Sometimes, it’s good to just let it all play out.

I really hope that Ian Cunningham gets hired away. We could really use that extra 3rd round pick because in addition to our needs in the trenches and toward adding a power RB we need to add another safety. Here are some of the candidates that could be available at the end of the 3rd round:

3. Alabama image Keon Sabb**, S, Alabama
Height: 6-1. Weight: 206.
Projected 40 Time: 4.48.
Projected Round (2025): 2-3.
1/4/24: Sabb played well for Alabama in 2024, recording two interceptions, four passes defended, and 39 tackles. He missed game action since mid October. With Michigan in 2023, he had 28 tackles with two interceptions and four breakups in 2023. Sabb was an immediate starter for the Crimson Tide after transferring from the Wolverines.

4. Maryland image Dante Trader Jr., S, Maryland
Height: 5-11. Weight: 196.
Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Projected Round (2025): 2-3.
1/4/24: Trader had 59 tackles with an interception and four passes broken up.

6/19/24: Trader has been a solid defender that last two seasons for Maryland. In 2023 he had 53 tackles with two interceptions and eight passes broken up. The previous season he had 62 tackles with two picks and six passes defended. Trader is undersized for the NFL and could stand to add some weight to tackle.

5. Texas image Andrew Mukuba, S, Texas
Height: 6-0. Weight: 185.
Projected 40 Time: 4.51.
Projected Round (2025): 2-4.
1/4/24: Mukuba has 55 tackles, four interceptions, and six passes broken up. He was superb in Texas’ huge road win over Michigan.

6/19/24: In 2023, Mukuba had 42 tackles and six passes defended. He transferred from Clemson to Texas after the season. Mukuba flashed ability in 2022 and 2021. He could be a riser if he builds on his performance and becomes more of a playmaker. As a sophomore, he had 53 tackles with an interception and three passes defended. In his freshman campaign, he totaled 47 tackles and six breakups.

6. Oklahoma image Billy Bowman Jr, S, Oklahoma
Height: 5-10. Weight: 194.
Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
Projected Round (2024): 3-5.
1/4/24: Bowman had 55 tackles, two interceptions, and three passes broken up. Team sources say that Bowman is a gamer with a knack for making big plays, but he has some blown assignments and will bite on some play fakes. They say that Bowman is not real explosive and undersized. They see Bowman as more of a mid-round prospect.

6/19/24: Bowman is not a big safety, but he makes up for it with impressive instincts and ball skils. In 2023 Bowman recorded six interceptions with four passes defended and 63 tackles. In 2022 he had 61 tackles with three interceptions and five passes broken up. Depending on how he does in coverage as a senior, Bowman could fit in the NFL as a hybrid safety and nickel corner.

7. North Carolina image Marcus Allen, S, North Carolina
Height: 6-2. Weight: 185.
Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
Projected Round (2024): 3-4.
1/4/24: Allen has 36 tackles, two interceptions, and four passes broken up.

6/19/24: Allen was a quality defender for the Tar Heels on the back end in the 2023 season. He amassed 49 tackles with an interception and eight passes broken up. For the NFL, Allen needs to add weight and fill out his frame.

8. Wisconsin image Hunter Wohler, S, Wisconsin
Height: 6-2. Weight: 211.
Projected 40 Time: 4.55.
Projected Round (2024): 3-4.
1/4/24: Wohler had 71 tackles with six passes broken up.

6/19/24: Wohler was a tackling machine for the Badgers in 2023 racking up 120 stops on the season. He also had two interceptions and six passes broken up. Wohler is a good run defender, and if he can improve in pass coverage, he could be a riser in 2024.

9. Michigan image Rod Moore, S, Michigan
Height: 6-0. Weight: 198.
Projected 40 Time: 4.50.
Projected Round (2025): 3-5.
1/4/24: Moore did not play this season after suffering a torn ACL in March of 2024. He probably should take a redshirt and return to Michigan for the 2025 season.

6/19/24: During Moore’s freshman season, he started four games while contributing on special teams. Since then, Moore has locked down a starting safety position starting as a sophomore in 2022 and has been a reliable defender for the Wolverines. In 2022 he had 71 tackles with four interceptions and seven passes broken up. In 2023, Moore had 38 tackles with two interceptions and five passes broken up. Moore has quality ball skills and is a versatile safety on the back end.

10. Virginia image Jonas Sanker, S, Virginia
Height: 6-1. Weight: 210.
Projected 40 Time: 4.49.
Projected Round (2025): 3-5.
1/4/24: Sanker was a solid defender for the Cavaliers in 2024 totaling 98 tackles with two sacks, one interception, and four passes broken up. He had 107 tackles with three forced fumbles and 11 breakups in 2023. Sanker has the size to be a strong safety candidate for the NFL.

11. Ohio State image Lathan Ransom, S, Ohio State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 205.
Projected 40 Time: 4.48.
Projected Round (2025): 3-5.
1/4/24: Ransom has 61 tackles with three forced fumbles and two passes broken up.

6/19/24:: In 2023, Ransom totaled 34 tackles, an interception and two passes defended. He missed the final month of the season with an injury. Ransom racked up 74 tackles, an interception, 1.5 sacks, and three pass breakups in 2022. He dealt with injuries but continued to play solid football for Ohio State. Ransom benefited from moving to safety from cornerback for 2022. Ransom worked his way onto the field as a freshman in 2021 and earned more playing time as the year progressed. He totaled 38 tackles, a forced fumble and five passes defended that season. Ransom has excellent size and some natural cover skills.

12. Notre Dame image Xavier Watts, S, Notre Dame
Height: 5-11. Weight: 198.
Projected 40 Time: 4.51.
Projected Round (2024): 3-5.
1/4/24: Watts has 60 tackles with six interceptions, eight passes broken up, and a forced fumble.

6/19/24: In 2023 Watts was a dangerous ball hawk for the Fighting Irish. He recorded seven interceptions with four passes defended while totaling 52 tackles. It was a huge jump over his play in 2022 when he had 39 tackles and zero interceptions. Watts could be a riser if he stays consistent to his 2023 production.

13. Penn State image Kevin Winston Jr., S, Penn State
Height: 6-2. Weight: 205.
Projected 40 Time: 4.52.
Projected Round (2025): 3-5.
1/4/24: Winston had 13 tackles with a forced fumble in the first two games of the season and hasn’t played since. Winston should go back to college next season. In 2023, he had 60 tackles with an interception and five passes defended.

14. Michigan State image Malik Spencer*, S, Michigan State
Height: 6-1. Weight: 206.
Projected 40 Time: 4.48.
Projected Round (2025): 3-5.
1/4/24: Spencer has 44 tackles with an interception and two passes batted.

6/19/24: In 2023, Spencer started eight games at safety for the Spartans and had a respectable season. He totaled 72 tackles with six passes broken up. In 2024, Spencer could improve his splash play production by generating some interceptions and forced fumbles.

Dice, i like your analytical pragmatic approach, but always based on the past so would love to see your predictive models.

“Purdy is an excellent QB” - so what contract should the 49ers give him? What would your plan be for him?

I think he is totally scheme driven and many QBs would succeed there.

I just don’t understand what Jerry is really working at here. You deny a team permission to talk to him but instead he seems content to let the clock run out on the window to negotiate with him exclusively. Why do that?
