Not really it was widely expected the rams would beat them Sam dornald has been brought back down to earth and it’s gonna cost him 10s of millions of dollars

And it’s unnerving that the Bears haven’t answered for themselves what the short list is yet. I like the idea of hiring McCarthy. It makes sense that McCarthy will work well for Caleb. That’s not to say better than Ben Johnson could. But this reasoning left unsaid is based on the perception that the state of the Bears overall lack of stability is somehow better addressed by known quantity McCarthy, which is somehow what Caleb needs most of all. Stability and traction, guaranteed. I don’t necessarily disagree with the premise. Nor that it may be right. But there is never a time to settle for a comfort zone out of weakness. If Ben is more talented and relevant right now, to hell with being safe. Ben Johnson wouldn’t coach “structure”? Orlovsky isn’t making it clear why he is making this distinction.

heard on radio today that mccarthy likes to take post-snap decision making out of the equation w/ QB leaning heavily on analyzing coverage pre-snap

Where are you getting that? He had a better year in 2024.
This is true. But Smith having a better year in 24 than he did in 23 doesn’t mean that Carroll is washed. His resurgence came under Carroll. But I get it. You’re not a Carroll fan. I just happen to think that he’d bring forth the right thing for this particular team.
His resurgence came under Shane Waldron who Carroll was going to fire and Dave Canales the QB coach in 2022 who is now the Panthers head coach. Carroll is a defensive coach CEO type he lets his coordinators do there thing. What Carroll was known for defense, hasn't been good in 8 years. So his upside based on his last years in Seattle is a .500 coach and since he will be 74 to start the season (which would make him the oldest coach in NFL history beating George Halas at 72 and Romeo Crennel at 73) so you are looking to also hire his successor. Gus Bradley is available, does that work for you?

they were decimated by injury and purdy is an excellent QB
Dice, i like your analytical pragmatic approach, but always based on the past so would love to see your predictive models.
“Purdy is an excellent QB” - so what contract should the 49ers give him? What would your plan be for him?
I think he is totally scheme driven and many QBs would succeed there.

Let it be known, national media is not mocking the Bears. Only local media with this whole "sky is falling".
Everyone agrees the Bears need to hit on this hire. Let's say they only interviewed Ben Johnson and two Rooney rule hires. Then 3 years down the line it's a failure. Same folks poo pooing now would poo poo that.
Kevin McConnell should've been interviewed last go around based on what? Your recommendation? Bears weren't the only team not to talk to him.fleet wrote:nitetrain8603 wrote:Again everyone complains about not talking to Kevin McConnell and talking to everyone under the sun last time around when "it's free to do so and you get more intel".

Complained only about not bringing in OConnell. Not about not bringing in “everyone under the sun”. It all boils down to having a clue. The Bears didn’t identify OConnell as someone to speak to. Was it an inability to identify good candidates? Trace Armstrong? What was it? Hubris? The Bears didn’t bring in all the quarterbacks this past draft. There is something wrong with their talent evaluation process. Maybe some sort of hubris going on. Locking onto people. Poles does that, even against advice. If they’re overreacting now to past mistakes, that’s fine I guess. But it’s again, being different. Different works against the Bears. It highlights their previous dysfunction.

You sound like you're arguing they should've interviewed "the right coach" last go around and not "all the coaches".
