Chislic wrote:Mitch's declining contract... is interesting. This year NY could trade him for players like Jordan Clarkson or Daniel Gafford straight up. Next year after his deal kicks in Mitch's salary will be less than Jordan Clarkson and Daniel Gafford. NY would have to include another player to make the salary work. IF NY is over the 2nd apron they wouldn't be able to do that. So the declining contract he signed years ago was great at the time, but now with his questionable injury history and the new bargaining agreement... not so much.

The new bargaining agreement completely reshaped what NBA teams are able to do. Since the rules have changed, NY has stopped signing players to contract that declines. This is noteworthy. Mcbride's contract is also declining BTW.

If our bench was locked in no worries. This all would be great. But since we're still reconfiguring the bench with the assets we have I think NY will possibly move these guys to get more value in return rather than wait until the contracts have depreciated.

NY also has 2nd apron concerns next summer, which need to be taken into account when looking at trading Mitch for an ascending contract. Assuming you keep Hukporti, you’re entering the summer about 11.5mm below the 2nd apron. The tax mid level is about 5.7mm. Assuming you use that, your left with enough room for 2 vet minimum slots and signing your 2nd rd pick (NY has the better of BOS/MEM - although they can use cash to move up). This leaves the team about 400k below the 2nd apron.

Using the taxpayer mid level is somewhat important because it’s the last chance to use it before a likely 2 year stint in the 2nd apron. Sims or Precious likely get one of the min slots so the team has their bird rights for a “human TPE” type of deal. In that regard, I see a world where Huk moves onto a 2 way deal and they spend the extra 150k to keep Sims around. Once your a 2nd apron team, it only costs money to go over it, and say what you want about James Dolan but he’s never been afraid to spend money, and creating large expiring contracts with bird rights is your 2nd apron loophole.

Back to the mid level next summer - Malcom Brodgon would be my #1 target. Even if he’s not the player he was when he won the 6th Man award in Boston in a few years ago, he fills many needs on the roster. Another guard who can handle and create, another shooter off the bench, and he’s got size to play with Brusnon and cover for Duce being an undersized 2. He will be entering his age 33 season next year so the taxpayer MLE feels right for him. Adding him, plus a healthy Mitch pushing Hart to the bench, will go a long way in balancing the rotation

Brunson/Bridges/Anunoby/Towns/Robinson
Brogdon/McBride/Hart/Precious
Kolek/Pacome/Sims
2nd Rd Pick
Vet Min

Do the Knicks even have 5 future picks to trade? Seconds I guess!

I'd be worried about spacing. Where are the three point shots coming from?

This is interesting. BAM and KAT would be interchangeable at the 4/5, with BAM upgrading our defense and providing additional playmaking from the elbow. But the last year of BAM's contract concerns me.

Given the 2nd apron rules, you really want to limit being a second apron team 3 years in a row. And while BAM makes about $2.5MM less than OG next year, his $59MM player option in 28/29 is about $11MM more than OG's. In 2029, Brunson will be on a new contract (likely a full max), Bridges will be in the 3rd year of his new contract (and he has all the leverage in the world to get a similar deal to OG after what NY gave up to get him) and KAT will be a free agent. What's more, we won't have draft picks in 29 and 31, so a reset isn't going to be in the cards. All the guys will be in their early 30's and if we have the kind of playoff success we are hoping for, with a lot of miles on their bodies.

On the flip side, if BAM raises your ceiling over the next 4 seasons, it might make sense to pull the trigger and consider the 29 and 31 picks sunk costs.

Why would Miami do it, they'd have no center?

I swear to all the higher powers if we have a bench full of midgets again light last year I am out.

Last year our bench was Burks, McBride, Hart and we were in talks for Bruce friggin Brown.
No. No. Never. No
Get me a 6'8"+ player. Preferably 6'10" shot blocker.
No more repeats.
We just drafted one of those guys who was supposed to be "NBA ready" and Lonnie Walker is just chillin on FA. I got little people galore available. No. No assets to further allow Thibs to march out shooting guards at the power forward position.

I'm with you on the size thing. If we'd simply signed a 6'8 equivalent of Shamet, instead of Shamet, the rotation would be so much better now. ie a forward who could spell OG and Mikal that Thibs would play.

Most teams seem to have a 6'7 long defender that they throw at JB for long stretches. Why don't we have one of those?

Picks don't grow on trees as they gave up almost all their future 1sts for my Mikal. Kessler is not worth 6, nor 5, nor 4....

While the Knicks traded 5 FRPs for Mikal, the Kings are in the lead for Cam Johnson and all it could take is Kevin Huerter, Trey Lyles and a FRP lol

With that said, we should reach out to the Nets and see what it would take to get Cam

Surprised they'd trade him after he was a key addition in getting him to the Finals. Video says he's mle about $13 million, can Knicks take that on.

Also Mavs would want win now player(s). Who could we give them, and not be weakened?

This is what I came here for.

Then, if they don’t want to include sexton (which would save them double digit millions in cap space next year), I’d try to get Javonte Green.

Both Cams' are overrated on that team. This team needs a young leader like a SGA, not more followers.

Gafford + P.J. Washington + 2025 1st + 2031 unprotected 1st for OG Anunoby has the makings of an interesting deal.

The logic here is turning OG into two league average starting players, and creating some room/assets to round out the roster over the summer. Dallas already has a full roster built around a top-3 player and adds an elite defensive piece into the mix.

Dallas only has 500k in wiggle room below the 1st apron (they are hard capped there because of the Klay sign and trade and use of the non-tax mle) so another contract - likely Maxi Kleber - NY can add Kleber into this deal by including Sims and Shamet, and Kleber is an $11mm expiring to play with next summer.

Brunson-Bridges-Hart-Towns-Gafford
Payne-McBride-Washington-Robinson
Kolek-Dadiet-Kleber-Achiewa-Hukporti

The ideal situation is turning Kleber’s 11mm a lot ( or combined with Precious closer to 16mm with enough room for another min a slot) and the 2025 1st (or other 2nds) into a rotation piece, ideally another player who can put the ball on the ground and create.
