Re: Cam Johnson Marathon - Pacer Yourself
If the Pacers do make a mid-season trade, I think it will be one that positions us to re-sign Turner without tax problems.

Hopefully you guys do it because even Obi/Nesmith feels like it would weaken you more than it helped.
Well, we’ve essentially played without Nesmith all year, but in his two games back, he’s looked great and picked up right where he left off. But based off the amount of time he’s missed, would almost be like Obi for Cam straight up.
Obi fits perfectly with the Pacers offense, so yea, it would suck to lose him, but Cam is a better player, we could easily slot him in and move Walker to 4.
Right now the Pacers have 11 guys who deserve to get minutes on a good team. So a 2 for 1 could help clear things up. Of course, injuries happen as well and you never know when you’ll need that depth.
I get that Cam is a better shooter than Obi & not quite as bad defensively, but that marginal upgrade doesn’t feel worth Nesmith’s chippiness & that extra depth. Having those extra bodies is so important to your ability to give it 110% for 48 minutes.
Totally get the logic of a 2 for 1 for you…thus wondering if a Mikal for Nembhard & Walker foundation could benefit both teams this summer…I just don’t think Cam is the right 2 for 1 despite how hot he’s been to start this season.
Nembhard and Walker are significantly more important to the Pacers than Nesmith and Toppin.
I also feel like you’re underrating Cam a bit. He’s one of the best pure shooters in the NBA, has great size, and can defend numerous positions. His game doesn’t rely on athleticism either, so he should age well in basketball years.
Wouldn’t even remotely consider a Nembhard/Walker for Bridges trade.

Pacers add the top player at the deadline replicating the Siakam playoff push, leveraging the value of Walker while preserving draft capital.
Pacers unload longterm money which is vital given raises due Myles Turner and Nembhard.
Nets get a solid prospect, tank, and can flip Nesmith.
Any 3rd team bidders for Nesmith?
I don't think the Pacers would trade Walker he's just starting to look like what we all though he might be.

That should be the offer.
No I wouldn't do that either!

we started our climb in the standings when Nembhard got healthy. he's the key to our defense and can run the offense when teams crowd Haliburton.

I think Nembhard is the long-term pairing with Haliburton. This team just works with Nembhard in the lineup.
Understandable, I do like him & him being out was surprisingly devastating, but I do rate Mikal more.

Mikal is also significantly better than Cam...who is a very good shooter with size, but he's not a plus defender at any position and he needs his shots created for him.

Oh, I've explained to folks on the GB how dramatically different you were with your wing defenders out...and Nembhard is the one I rate the most as a player; though I like Sheppard a lot too & Nesmith is an annoying twat to play against...but my thinking was that Bridges is an even better defender than Nembhard & a better shooter, while Mathurin will soon be a better 3rd option offensively, for when teams lock in on Haliburton too much.

Not sure I’d say significantly better, but obviously I agree he is better overall. I think Cam is a bit better defensively than you give him credit for, mostly from just understanding where to he and such. Also, the Pacers are one of the best passing teams in the NBA, so I think Cam would be fine for us.
Even with Bridges being better though, he’s not worth Nembhard and Walker for the Pacers. Nembhard is a key player to our teams success, if you don’t believe me, go look at the article I posted on the GB. Walker is also a player flashing all the right stuff. The trade just doesn’t make sense for the Pacers from any point of view.

I feel like you're under-rating Bridges on both ends of the court, but you're preaching to the choir about Nembhard & Walker...which is why I think losing Mikal for those two might not be a disaster for us

And Cam's not as bad as Bojan defensively...my bad if it seemed like I was saying he was just a complete disaster...but he's not as good as someone like Randle either, so I wouldn't really call it a selling point.
Oh I don't think it's one that either team would do. Just a thought experiment I've been mulling over the past few days that does feel like it could leave both teams in a stronger spot.

Oh, me too, if rated straight up against each other. I definitely agree.
But in terms of additional ball handling, contractual status/salary, and with Indy still having Nesmith/Walker/Sheppard to slot in there at SF, I clearly prefer the Nembhard/others over trading them for Mikal.
The additional "true PG" out there for Indy is huge. And to play 48 minutes with Haliburton, Nembhard, and McConnell pushing the tempo is a huge plus for Indy. As is the ability to throw out a ton of depth and play fresh.
Even if Mikal is better than Nembhard overall, I probably wouldn't swap them for each other. I'd try every other avenue of Mathurin plus pieces to try and get Mikal, and just move on if it required Nembhard.

Fair enough. I’m still a Mathurin believer and think that Mathurin - Bridges would be tougher to deal with than Nembhard - Bridges.
I guess that begs the question, what does a Mathurin based Bridges trade look like?

Salary wise, it would require Obi and Isaiah Jackson to go with Mathurin? At that point, I don’t know how many 1sts it would take? If it’s even possible.

I just don’t see a deal getting done between the two teams.
Not to mention the chemistry aspect, don’t get me wrong, I do think Cam would fit in fine, but the teams chemistry is amazing right now and this would be a massive change.
I don't know. I sort of think you might be able to improve chemistry with a Johnson deal. I think Johnson could be a huge boon for IND. Johnson might help get your offense back to near elite levels as he replaces what you lost when you sent out Hield. If Johnson can fill that movement/volume 3pt shooting role that could boost your offense imo.

The offense already got back to top tier since Nembhard returned. They’ve turned into a top 2 net team (offense/defense) over the last 10 games.

It would be just enough for Indy to stay out of the tax, but would require Jackson or Obi shifted to a third team for a million or two less to Ny to avoid hard cap issues?

What if it's Nesmith instead of Obi? I think you'd avoid the tax by a few 100K, and we'd be taking back less than we sent out.
IND
Turner | Bryant
Siakam | Toppin
Bridges | Walker
Nembhard | Sheppard
Haliburton | McConnell
NYK
Towns | Robinson | Sims
Anunoby | Achiuwa
Hart | Nesmith* | Dadiet
Mathurin* | McBride* | Shamet
Brunson | Payne | Kolek
Not sure that makes us a better team this year, even if we could get someone genuinely good using Jackson + Achiuwa / Sims / Payne / Dadiet + draft capital. But maybe in the summer if our FO can't find a quality 8th man and our core falls short?
With another offseason under his belt, I can see Mathurin making enough progress for him & Nesmith to help us more than Mikal alone. I do like how the blended lineups would look if other-Ben took another step next season.
Payne/Kolek - Mathurin - Hart - Achiuwa - Towns
Brunson - McBride - Nesmith - Anunoby - Robinson
Payne/Kolek - Mathurin - Hart - Anunoby - Robinson

No. Nesmith, Mathurin, Jackson would add over $1m, putting Indy completely in the tax before filling the 14th spot. I think even salary dumping Wiseman elsewhere and doing the whole go 2 weeks with 13, sign a ten day, then go 2 more weeks with 13, and then signing a 0yos minimum wouldn’t get Indy under.
