A lot of encouraging signs tonight. Thibs played 9 guys early and the difference in energy showed. We played at a much faster pace and were able to maintain said pace till the end of the 3rd. We scored 94 points in the first 3 quarters!
Going forward we should try to play faster as we have a ton of speed and great transition finishers on the roster. This will also yield more trail 3s for kat which he's deadly at. I think the number we need to aim for is 120ppg. Only 3 teams in the nba average more than 120 (Mem, Cle, Den). We have more talent than all 3 of those teams.
https://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/points-per-gameBy playing faster, getting more paint touches and spacing better (looking at hart and og feel free to take 2 steps from the dunker to the corner instead of letting your man become a second defender on the ball handler) we can easily get to this number. We are averaging 117 a game while playing one of the slowest paces in the nba and with tired legs.
By making these small adjustments we can easily score 3 more ppg and outscore 27/30 teams on almost every single night. To put it in perspective Memphis won 108-106 vs Min tn and this game was essentially 16 pts below their season's average. When you run hard and score you put so much pressure on the opponent that they start making more mistakes and eventually run out of gas. 108 being one of your lowest scoring nights is insane (7 teams in the nba average under 109 ppg).
We proved we can play this pace every single time we play a fast team. Atl tn is a perfect example
https://www.nba.com/stats/teams/advanced?dir=-1&sort=PACE. Atl is 3rd in pace and we are 25th in pace so essentially we played their style tn and they couldn't keep up and we nearly beat them by double digits. Our roster has some of the fastest players in the Nba. Most of these guy were also excellent in transition before joining the Knicks (not to mention nearly every player is better in transition).
I know this isn't normally Thibs' style but I truly believe this is our path to championship contention. Other teams just don't have the length, speed and ball handling we posses across 9 players. The goal should be 120ppg every night, try to get as many paint touches as possible and play 9-10 guys every night so we can effectively play fast and have the energy to switch more.
