And they signed team friendly extensions, so it's not hard to trade them if the Celtics need to.

Also, Celtics were never going to have flexibility once they gave the Jays 600m.

Until they are traded, we don’t know how easy it would be to trade them. The financial/economic conditions around the NBA has changed as the new CBA is fully digested and some teams thought they’d be able to flip big money contracts and so far have not been able to (Jerami Grant, Zach LaVine, etc). And even if Hauser and White are easy to trade, the teams that would want them generally don’t have capspace so we’d take back a contract of comparative dollar amount but fewer years which won’t necessarily help with the short term tax bill. Everything Wyc has done financially doesn’t make a lot sense given he also knew he was going to put the team up for sale, imo… and this has increased the uncertainty going forward

I disagree.

Wyc only did what Celtic fans wanted and that was to keep the team intact so that it can make another run at a championship.

I think the new CBA with the aprons, luxury tax and penalaties are going to take the steam out of the Feb 6th trade deadline.

A quick refresher for the Celtics at the trade deadline:

As a second-apron team, the Celtics have limited options at the deadline. Here’s a list of the restrictions they are working with:

Boston can’t aggregate contracts in trades.
They can’t send cash in trades.
Boston must send out more salary than they receive.
They can’t trade a first-round pick seven years in the future, and that pick falls to the bottom of the first round if they are over the second apron at least twice in a four-season span.

Also remember the team that the Celtics could be potentially dealing with may have some if not all of the same restrictions.

Go have fun Brad! :D

Not necessarily true. Most, if not all, of those restrictions no longer apply if resulting trade puts Celtics under the second apron/first apron.

EDIT: If, for example, the Celtics are able to trade away enough aggregated salary to get under the second apron, they'd then be hard-capped at the second apron.

Not a realistic suggestion but in the spirit of "there are no bad ideas" how about Jrue Holiday to the Lakers?

Bring back Rui Hachimura and have a 3rd team (Pistons?) come in to eat Gabe Vincent and a small contract from LA to make the deal work with the cap. Lakers are desperate enough to take a big swing but have limited assets. Jrue is actually a decent fit for their roster and played with AD previously with positive results.

Rui's shooting 40% from 3 for the 2nd year in a row and shaves $13m off the books. Defense takes a big step back but just launch even more 3's to compensate. Leaves a viable path to getting below the 2nd apron and even repeater tax in the years to come while still being a contender in the East. Huge benefit to current/future ownership.

Could go even more crazy and send Horford to LA as well. Jrue/Al fix a lot of their issues with their shooting/defense (although turns them into a bit of a nursing home). Lakers offload Vanderbilt as well to make the money work (send all their remaining draft capital to Pistons for the privilege). We take back Fontecchio as a poorer depth version of Hauser to make the money work.

Then send a couple of our firsts and a spare big over to Danny for Walker Kessler.

BOS in: Rui, Kessler, Fontecchio
BOS out: Jrue, Horford, Queta, 2 firsts, WAS '25 2nd

LAL in: Jrue, Horford
LAL out: Rui, Vincent, Vanderbilt, 2031 first any 2nds available

UTA in: Queta, 2 firsts from Boston
UTA out: Kessler

DET in: Vincent, Vanderbilt, LA 20231 1st and WAS '25 2nd, Lakers 2nds
DET out: Fontechhio

Lakers take a big swing for LeGM, Utah tanks harder and gets picks (Danny's fave) and Pistons sell cap space for their share.

C's shave $14m off the books this year and could conceivably drop below the both the 2nd apron and repeater tax line in '26 by getting rid of Fontecchio and Springer and just signing vet minimums and 2nd round picks. For this year we'd have:

White/ Pritchard
Brown/ Baylor/ Springer
Tatum/ Hauser/ Fontecchio
Rui/ Walsh/ Tillman
KP/ Kessler/ Kornet

Is it worse than what we have now? Yeah probably but it'd solve a lot of the money issues going forward and move our two oldest players for a 26 and 23 year old who could keep the window open longer.

Celtics traded Marcus Smart just in time, before he dived off the cliff,
can they do the same with Holiday?

I like the creativity. First, I don’t dig the Horford part of it. Horfords value against a Giannis, Jokic or Cleveland’s frontline playoff series is too great to include him, IMO, and as a $10 million expiring, there’s no future financial reason to lose his oncourt positives. Plus Al is too important to the locker room, so I don’t like that part of it.

Jrue to Lakers is an interesting idea because he does seem to fit with their goals and timeline and they wouldn’t have to give up firsts to add him. I’m not a huge Rui guy, he’s fine but I’m more in the category of shooting so many 3PTA introduces too much variance that’s more likely to cause us to get bounced if we go cold and shoot 31% over six or seven games, rather that we should lean more into 3PT offense… But the financial relief would be very helpful for the overall economics of the team, and Rui is a rotation forward in the league and much younger obviously. You’d have to consider it from that perspective…

It’s funny I was listening to the NBA front office YouTube show with Keith Smith a few weeks ago and they went through trades between the teams in Celtics-Lakers history. There were only three trades ever between the rivals. One was in the 70s and before my time. In the late 90s Pitino traded Travis Knight straight up for Tony Battie, and then in 04, Danny acquired Gary Payton and a first for Chris Mimh, Chucky Atkins and Jumaine Jones… so it’s literally been 20 years since a trade between BOS and LAL …

Oh… and as to the Walker Kessler part of it, I don’t think his value is Queta plus two firsts. Kessler is gonna need an extension after next season and then we could be almost back to where we were moneywise with just keeping Jrue. I think there are some interesting big men in the later first round and second round of the coming draft so I’d rather keep our picks and add a big to develop from the draft, then we get four full cheap years of a center on our books, that’s my preference

Seems like a possible precursor to the Suns trading for Butler. PHO can now trade 1 or 2 of these 1sts to Miami, and then trade the other 1 or 2 to a 3rd team in order to offload the Beal contract. Along with other stuff of course.

Danny takes a swing and thinks that Suns pick will be the best of all.

Danny obviously feels very secure in his gig, lol. I like the upside play. Though, it feels more like Danny could be trading 30, 27 and 24 for a future 20. 31 is far enough out that the Suns can/will bottom out, but still have time to rebuild a little with free agents. Will probably turn out like the SAC and MEM picks. Exciting before they both had franchise best seasons, and still decent just not as wonderful as we dreamed. #romeoisland

The pro is Utah has too many picks in those years anyways. And, if you had 30, 27 and 24 in a draft and had the chance to bundle for a late lottery pick you'd jump at it. If it ends up a top 20 pick, I think Danny won.

They are basically two games out of the play in and two games out of the top six. One of the more wild protected pick races I can remember there.

At this point I’d rather Philly just keep it.

It’s probably my desired outcome that Philly sneaks into the 8th seed and sends OKC a 15th pick. I’d hate to see Cooper Flagg end up on Joel Embiid’s team, should Philly luck out and win the #1 pick.

I think the whole Philly experience starting at the bubble, paying a first and second to dump Horford, Ben Simmons playoff meltdown and holdout, trading for James Harden, James Hardens playoff fizzle and holdout, extending an injured Embiid, and then signing Paul George to a max, Daryl Morey has lost all his aura.

I think when Philly inevitably fires Daryl, he’ll go work in media or be a consultant but probably not POBO for another team after the total mess of his five years in Philly…
