This post has to be a joke?

Kenan Allen is literally one of the greatest route runners of all time. Moore isn't too shabby either. Odunze was drafted because of his route running.

I don't think it was the route running, more the routes they were told to run.

Goff has done much better with Ben Johnson, and it wasn’t all trick plays.

Looks like Al Golden is leaving Notre Dame to be the Bengals DC.

Not only that, while the play calls may have been Johnson, the aggressiveness and frequency in which they were used was Campbell.

Either way, hiring a guy like Johnson simply means they more emphasis will be placed on guys with certain skill sets while others may become more marginalized. The player that I worry most about not fitting into BJs system is Odunze……unless he can become a Keenan Allen (in his prime) type receiver.

Just out of curiosity, what is the reason for worrying about Odunze in his system?

Well, he’s not a speedster type receiver. He’s more of a route running jump ball type receiver…..which will be just fine for a BJ offense. But he will need to be better at those things than what we saw this season. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not particularly concerned at all about any player that we will have. But IF there was one, for me Rome would be the guy.

I have the same concern for sure. The one thing keeping me optimistic are the reports that Johnson's a bit red-assed. Doesn't seem like he has to be the players friend whereas I got the feeling Nagy (and Flus) did want to be their friends.

Ok I get that. He's no cheetah but he's not slow. We'll see if he can be utilized properly. Might get more opportunities without Allen ahead of him in the depth chart.

I think the consensus is that Allen walks. But I’m not completely sold on the idea that he will. Especially if he’s willing to come back at a team friendly number.

If Johnson can't make Odunze work, there is something wrong with his offense.
I think the bigger issue for Oduzne (and Moore) was CW this past season. Hopefully that gets corrected.

Honestly, I think the problem for just about everyone was the offense as a whole. Caleb threw bad passes, guys dropped balls, missed blocks. It was just a cluster you know what.

While Williams is obviously very fast, we don’t actually know his 40 time. But probably faster than Odunze who ran a 4.45? Amon Ra ran a 4.59 at the combine. Odunze is fast enough to play for Ben in raw speed without any problems. He thinks he’s faster than he ran at the combine. The main thing is, BJ says he runs his system around the players he has, he doesn’t ask players to do things to fit into a system that they can’t do.

Yea he made Goff much better. IIRC, part of what made the Stafford trade so expensive (in terms of outgoing draft capital) for the Rams, was the fact that Detroit was also taking on Goff, who at the time was considered an albatross contract much like this past summer Zach Lavine. So bad there was a cost to move him in addition to the cost of acquiring Stafford. I don't think anyone has considered Goff to be an albatross since BJ got ahold of him and unlocked his best.

If Caleb still sucks this year, then he just sucks period. If BJ can't unlock him, then theres just nothing to unlock. Yet im sure people will still blame the coach. Just like we always blamed the coaches for Trubisky and Fields not being good when they haven't exactly excelled elsewhere either under better coaches.

I can understand skepticism because the Bears don't have anything like the Lions OL. But this seems to completely ignore the sustained success that the Lions had under Johnson. It's a lot more than trick plays, he's consistently run the ball (and well), and from what I've heard from his players, they've felt consistently put in position to be successful, including use of things that simplify the game for the QB - play action, etc. All of those bode well.

It also bodes well that he fixed on the Bears so quickly given he was basically the hottest name out there with many options including it seemed to go to LA with his choice of GM. That gives some credence to the Bears as having a solid base of talent and that he at least believed in management to provide needed assets and that he believes in Poles (and/or has enough input to make him comfortable).

He could be wrong, they could be wrong, it could all blow up, he might not be able to transition up a seat. But there's a lot of positives that seem to be overlooked in this critique.

Odunze seems plenty fast and can jump, at least per this reporting on his combine: https://sports.yahoo.com/rome-odunze-put-on-a-show-at-nfl-combine-then-did-something-rarely-ever-seen-043036778.html

And he's supposedly also a good route runner, I suspect with him and DJ, if (massive if) they can upgrade the line substantially, he'll have an extremely good year. I also suspect pretty strongly that the OL coaching was deficient. IIRC didn't the "terrible" Sam Mustipher go to Baltimore and play reasonably well? If Johnson gets a top tier OL coach, I would hope we see better performance from Braxton, Borom, Wright, maybe some use from Amigadije. Then hopefully 3 upper end additions from draft/FA.
