^^^ It won’t be too easy to land a ‘wow’ hire for OC if the job doesn’t have play calling. Shall see.

Too bad Brown got let go, this OC role here will be an "OC light". Kind of an OC that does not call plays. That would have been a good learning role for him.

Think I’m ok with this. A Slowik type feels like too many cooks. I liked the idea of finding another Hank Fraley: a sargeant at arms with strong positional expertise.

Declan Doyle is a name floated like that. Also the following:
I don’t disagree as far as the idea being OK with a smaller name. Unless someone like Slowik with bigger name wants to be associated with a Bears offense that suddenly explodes, to launch a HC run the following season. Though David Shaw could qualify as a good hire if not quite a wow hire. He’s back in the mix for the Bears. And he might like that above scenario.

fleet wrote:Hiring defensive coaches before the DC strikes me as a little curious. Though I haven’t paid much attention before to the order of things like that. On offense I get it because Ben is in essence, the OC, and he delegates the busy work to his “OC”
I'm wondering if they already know their DC, and these are his hires. Otherwise, it does seem unwise to bring in a coordinator that doesn't have full autonomy over the personnel on their side of the ball.

David Shaw would be a home run OC hire

Don't know much about him. Can you explain why he'd be good?

Re: Bears 10.0: GM and coach watch before the draft
If Poles can improve the O-Line in Free Agency by adding a Trey Smith at right guard, Drew Dalman from the Falcons at Center and one more depth O-Lineman I would be open to the Bears taking Ashton Jeanty with our pick at #10, if he even lasts that long. Lots of mocks having Jeanty going to the Cowboys at #12, but some analysts think he's a Top 5 talent. A few call him potentially generational. In a Ben Johnson offense Jeanty would be deadly. Always a threat to take it to the house from anywhere. His tackle breaking ability would terrorize defensive backfields when utilized in the passing game. He could be a YAC monster. And that threat would take a lot of pressure off Caleb. With Jeanty as a potential outlet opposing pass rushers would have something else to think about other then headhunting Caleb. The RB position is enjoying a little bit of a renaissance. The successful teams almost all have an effective ground game. Jeanty could be our Jahmyr Gibbs.

He has a strong history on the offensive side, most notably with the ravens in the nfl and then obviously with standford. Later took over as head coach. Had decent success there. I believe there was a gap in coaching until he went back to the ravens as a personnel guy. Not sure what he did during the gap other than do draft analysis. What I like most about him is that He fully embodies the “CEO” characteristics of a coach. Every time read or watch someone talk about him, the respect is through the roof. If there is anyone who can come in and establish a culture on offense, implement Johnson’s offense, create a high standard and keep players to that standard, it’s Shaw.

I don't know about using our FRP on a RB, but I could see using one of our second's on one if we can pick up 2-3 starters on the line in FA. the draft is supposed to be pretty deep in RB's.

Omarion Hampton from UNC seems perfect use of 2nd round pick using we go OL and DL with free agency and other picks.

Hampton would be an excellent choice too. In that scenario I'd go EDGE with our #10 pick and bolster the O-Line through free agency. Trey Smith at RG, Drew Dalman at Center and Alaric Jackson from the Rams to play LT (making Braxton our depth and swing tackle). We'd immediately have a Top 10 O-Line. The Bears have the money to do it. All of these proposed signings are guaranteed starters barring injury. You can't say that with potential rookies. I'd spend the other 2nd rounder on a defensive tackle like Deone Walker from Kentucky. A Dexter, Billings Walker unit at DT would be a pretty nice 3 headed monster.

I have been advocating for this for the last month, pre Johnson. Jeanty in my book is not Top 5 - he is the second best prospect after Hunter. Taking OL\Edge\DL at 10 just because we have a need at those positions would be the most shortsighted decision of all. If you are debating someone like Alt last year sure, but who is this guy at 10 who is neck and shoulder above him this year - Banks, Simmons, Campbell? We have FA, we have 2 2nd's and 2 3 rd's (if Cunningham takes the Jaguars job) we'll be fine.
On a side note I don't believe he would last till 10, but still.

Sounds like that might be a trade-down situation, then.
