NBA Identity Changers (with Mike Shearer)
In this episode of RealGM Radio, host Wes Goldberg is joined by Mike Shearer, author of Basketball Poetry on Substack, to discuss the NBA’s most impactful offseason additions and how they’ll reshape team identities across the league. From Norm Powell’s role in Miami and Kristaps Porzingis’ impact on Atlanta, to Al Horford’s fit in Golden State, they break down the players redefining their teams’ styles and expectations. Wes and Mike analyze how Kevin Durant brings instant offense to Houston, how Deandre Ayton could finally fill a crucial need for the Lakers, and how rookie VJ Edgecombe’s movement might unlock the Sixers’ offense. They even dive into coaching shifts like Mike Brown with the Knicks and the ripple effects of new ownership in Boston. 00:00 – Intro 01:00 – What “Identity Changers” Means in the NBA 02:15 – Norm Powell Revamps Miami Heat’s Offense 06:00 – Kristaps Porzingis Unlocks Trae Young & the Hawks 13:30 – Al Horford’s Impact on the Golden State Warriors 17:30 – Are the Warriors Still Contenders? 20:30 – Dylan Brooks Brings Toughness to the Phoenix Suns 25:30 – Mike Brown’s Coaching Shift for the Knicks 30:00 – Rookie VJ Edgecombe Gives the 76ers a New Look 34:40 – Tyus Jones & Desmond Bane Elevate the Orlando Magic 41:00 – Chris Paul & Brook Lopez in the Clippers’ Offense 45:00 – Deandre Ayton’s Redemption with the Lakers 48:40 – Luke Kornet Boosts the Spurs’ Defense 52:30 – Kevin Durant Changes the Houston Rockets’ Identity 56:40 – Cam Johnson Replaces Michael Porter Jr. in Denver 01:00:10 – Celtics’ Ownership Change and Future Outlook 01:03:00 – Final Thoughts: Teams Poised for Transformation RealGM Radio is powered in part by North Station Media (CLNS). He did! A couple nice passes too.

Ya, if Temple could hit a layup, Chomche would've had 1 pt, 2 rebs and 2 asts (0 to's) in 1.5 mins.

The thing I loved was how happy he was to be up with the big club and getting on the scoreboard with a few of his 905 mates. He had such a huge smile on his face after every good play. Great to see.

Ulrich definitely has some passing chops. I've seen it since summer league. He hits cutters with pretty accurate bounce passes and even behind-the-back.

He essentially made the same pass to Temple but the layup was softly contested but should be made.

Great to see him grab the rebound and push the ball up the court then making the sweet pass. Definitely 1 of Poeltl or Olynyk should be cashed in, with the seemingy high demand for C's.

His handle looks natural. I think he has the potential to effortlessly get to the basket.

In that first shot, with the middy he could have just went straight for the dunk.

There's really not much defenses can do if his handle gets good enough.

Obviously the skills and BB know how needs to get much better but he has one of the best starting points in the NBA, a very young 6"11 athletic freak.

Well, no, it's not. If he doesn't learn how to rebound, defend and/or move the ball more effectively, than he's going to be a fairly similar archetype. The difference will, then, be more about whether he can do it more efficiently than +1, +1% rTS. Possible, but again, we're talking about a guy who doesn't really yet offer anything aside from scoring and isn't going to be a first option. So it's still a legitimate concern, most especially in the context of making an All-League team.

Gradey would need to average something like 27 PPG on good efficiency to make an All NBA.

My hot take, and it's a long shot, but I do think Chomche has the chance to make one, and has the better chance over Gradey.

The tools and athleticism is there, but it's still a long shot. (I kind of liken Chomche to Siakam in that regard, but Chomche is taller)

The hype for young players is unreal on here. Let's just hope Chomche can make the to the bench and Gradey can make it to 6th man level and take it from there.

My expectation should Chomche stick in the league is a 6"11 Robert Williams (without the injuries hopefully). Essentially a game changer on defense and a lob threat on offense.

I do think he has the potential for much more as I obviously stated but time will tell on how his overall offense evolves.

His defense is his calling card. Offense is anyone's guess.

based on what I've seen in the G-league, his defense doesn't seem that good outside of the occasional block

He avgs like 3blks in under 30mins, that's not occasional, he's actually a good defender for an 18yr old first time playing in North America

so maybe for every 40 possessions you get 3 blocks, 17 ok defensive possessions and 20 bad defensive possessions? I don't know the exact ratio

Yeah, it's fine for an 18 year old playing for the first time in the G-league, but you can't say defense is his calling card if he's not that good at it

I've watched the last 5 G-League games in full and have been really impressed with his defense. He stays with drivers when he's out on the perimeter, and prevents/alters a ton of shots at the rim every time he's on the court.

What do you see that he's not doing well?

are you watching his defense possession by possession?

e.g.

Checks in

16:45 stays under on the P/R, gives both the ball-handler and his man 10 feet of space, zero defense played. Open mid-range floater.

18:26 still giving his opponent a ton of space, allows an and-1

22:15 goes from defending the perimeter to triple team a slasher heading towards the paint, his teammate gets there first and fouls

25:10 not really involved, gets a rebound

25:25 help D, alters shot

25:40 switches on P/R after teammate gets caught on screen. Gives the ball-handler 4 feet of space, who doesn't take the shot and swing passes. Opposing team gets offensive rebound off a miss and scores on a kick out, doesn't pick up anyone or box out on the secondary possession

26:20 Not involved in the play (transition 3)

26:48 gets caught watching the ball-handler with his back to his man in transition, gets beat to the basket and commits a foul

subbed out

So around 4 bad defensive possessions, 2 where he's not involved, 1 ok one and one block/altered shot

I think it's incredibly harsh to call any of those 4 'bad' defensive possessions.

18:26 he plays his man straight up and forces a circus shot, the foul wasn't called on him.
22:15 he left Jordan Minor alone at the top of the key (0-0 from 3pt in his G-League career) to help in the paint
25:40 he's using his length well and staying close enough to contest a shot while far enough to deter a drive
26:20 I don't see how you can watch Omuryi & Guerrier on that play and mark that as a negative on Chomche
26:48 agree with you on this one.

Also missed two more good possessions at 23:35 and 28:35.

He's definitely still learning, but he gives you way more positive than negative defensively each game.

I think it's incredibly harsh to call any of those 4 'bad' defensive possessions.

18:26 he plays his man straight up and forces a circus shot, the foul wasn't called on him.

He’s 4 feet back of any offensive player like he’s Jonas Valanciunas or something. It was a P/R, not a 1v1 possession, he sunk on the P/R and recovered poorly on his man who basically bodied him for a lay-up

22:15 he left Jordan Minor alone at the top of the key (0-0 from 3pt in his G-League career) to help in the paint

He should be covering for the other help defender, not joining him in the paint. There is zero need to triple team a terrible scrub. Ideally he hovers between the two on the perimeter to close out on kick outs or to cover cuts.

25:40 he's using his length well and staying close enough to contest a shot while far enough to deter a drive

4 feet away is definitely not close enough, the other white dude made an ugly floater the last time he gave that much space. I didn’t count this as a bad possession anyways, I labeled it “ok”, even though he just stood around and guarded/boxed out no one on the second possession

26:20 I don't see how you can watch Omuryi & Guerrier on that play and mark that as a negative on Chomche

I literally said he wasn’t involved in the possession.

26:48 agree with you on this one.

Also missed two more good possessions at 23:35 and 28:35.

Missed these two. The first I would label as “ok”, doesn’t really do anything special aside from standing straight up with his hands up, which every big man in history has done before. Second one is definitely not good prior to the missed layup, he doesn’t really do anything, I would label it as a nothing. Helped secure the rebound afterwards

He's definitely still learning, but he gives you way more positive than negative defensively each game.

If he was giving more positive defensively than negative, I think they’d give him the start ahead of Kaminsky

So Chomche got to go up against Embiid. He's already decent on defense with which I though should've been a 2 stl and 2 blk night.

On offense he's behind Orlando Robinson, who missed 2 bunnies tonight. More 905 time and maybe next year more regular rotation.

he didn't embarrass himself but with embiid, he's not being put in alot of actions where he has to read and recover. i think you will see how green he is when it's a more movement based team. he needs time.

Chomche playing with the main club tonight?

3 games in 24 hours might be a tad much but the guy is young.

Good experience. Go up against Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. See how he stacks up. I just want him to get rebounds. Already can see him get deflections.
