Knicks trade: Mitchell Robinson, 2025 2nd rounder (more favorable of BOS/MEM picks), 2026 2nd rounder (least favorable of DET/ORL/MIL)
Knicks receive: Jalen Smith
Why for NY? They cannot trust the health of Mitch and get a frontcourt player in Jalen Smith to pair with KAT. This also saves some money this year to create some breathing room under the 2nd apron.
Bulls trade: Jalen Smith
Bulls receive: Mitchell Robinson, 2025 2nd rounder (more favorable of BOS/MEM), 2026 2nd rounder (least favorable of DET/ORL/MIL)
Why for CHI? Shut down Mitch for the rest of the year to improve their tanking chances and get two 2nd rounders out of it. Showcase Mitch off next year and have a big expiring contract next year to possibly get more assets at next year’s deadline.

Re: NYK-CHI
That's not bad if the Bulls actually plan to tank.
You sure Thibs would play Carter though? Doesn't necessarily seem like a Thibs guy. Hard to tell though.

Re: NYK-CHI
I don't get this for Chicago. They take on more money attached to a guy whose availability is on the Robert Williams schedule for a couple of bad 2nds? While giving up a useful player?
Robinson is negative ballast. Especially if you are telling us Chicago shouldn't expect to play him this year.

Re: NYK-CHI
Swap Smith for Vucevic and there's something to talk about for the Bulls but giving up Smith on a good contract for Robinson is a flat no.
Smith isn't stopping a tank so there's zero motivation for the Bulls.

Re: NYK-CHI
While the right idea as a concept, this doesn't work for either team. The Knicks do this trade only if--as is looking more possible each day--Robinson's injury was more serious than reported (meaning that Robinson won't be coming back this season and may be done as a high-level contributing player). Why would Chicago want any part of that?
Regarding Jalen Smith, while he's a fine player, he doesn't really give us anything that Precious, Sims and Huk don't. Why trade Mitch (our only remaining "asset") for some guy who'd likely ride the bench, maybe playing 10 minutes a game?
More to the point, as I keep posting, due to Thibs' preferred defensive schemes, the Knicks desperately need a significantly above-average rim-protector/shot blocker with some potential on offense. And given our lack of tradable assets, I don't currently see a path to getting such a player...unless some crazy gm out there decides to buy high on Mitch. And if nobody bites, then we might as well keep Mitch and hope for a miracle.

RIP magnumt--you're literally why I'm still here on these boards.

Re: NYK-CHI
The Bulls only signed Smith 6 months ago, he's not the center they're trying to trade. He's young enough that if he plays well he should be resigned when maybe the Bulls have more around him. Robinson might come back this year but without him the Bulls have one center or anybody over 6-8, Vucevic who they look ready to move. They need to play a center and have a backup, any internet GM understands this. a pair of picks in the 50's isn't enticing.

Re: NYK-CHI
Mitch is a lot better than Smith when on the court, but the Bulls are in even worse shape to deal with his durability than we are...and they're not happy collecting losses just because they're not a good team.
So unless Mitch is back to 100% and capable of anchoring a top 10 defense by himself again, it doesn't make much sense for them...but this would only make any sense for us, if Mitch suffered a setback and was going to miss the whole season.
Don't think there's any scenario where both teams would go for this, even if the picks were upgraded.
