Re: OT: Visiting NYC, recommendations?
LES better late night, I wonder if they still have many Hookah places. Used to love those.
My ex lived on Spring and Bowery so I would be in that area a bunch.

Re: OT: Visiting NYC, recommendations?
How old are you (roughly)? Are you coming alone or with people? If with people who (GF, wife, friends, lots of people, etc.)? What kind of scene are you comfortable and not comfortable in (describe ideal day or night)? This is important especially if you want to just walk. What's your budget? Do you get grossed out by dirty/smelly places or are you the type that loves grit and grime? Unless you have a lot of stamina, you'd probably want to be in an area that is close to most of the sites that you would like to see (in your ideal world). So as much info as possible helps.

Re: OT: Visiting NYC, recommendations?
Sadly, I left Brooklyn 2 years ago for the suburbs. My recommendation are probably out of date but If you end up in Williamsburg, go to Anthony and son’s panini shop. They do Italian sandwiches that are to die for. L'Industrie Pizzeria has great pizza but they’ve blown up since I’ve left. So it could be a decent wait. Can’t go wrong eating in either village, UES, UWS either. If you’re looking for bagels, Brooklyn bagel is my fave place. They’ve got spots in union square and Chelsea. They got a million fun cream cheese flavors. For Chinese/ soup dumplings Shanghai 21 in Chinatown. If you want Italian and are feeling fancy Scarpetta is really good

The Brooklyn Bridge Hotel is supposed to be really really nice. It might be close enough to everything (if you have a lot of stamina). You can walk the Bridge to get into lower Manhattan (China Town, Little Italy, etc). And it's close (kinda) to the hotspots in Brooklyn.

I gotta see some family in Staten Island and Brooklyn. I thought staying on the LES might make things easier, on top of having better late night vibes.
It depends on what you're looking for and how much you walk.
Lower-East is much better to walk around, find cool stores and small restaurants, local bars. The midtown location is better for Central park, Time Square, Broadway shows, Rockefeller center, ritzy expensive big stores, so if you like to do a bit of walking, it depends on what you're looking for, but basically anywhere can be reached by subway so it's not a big difference.
I would do lower east, because I like the neighborhood better. It's always been cooler, but it's probably not a big difference.
I would say go to McSorleys, but the last time I went, the line was so long it wasn't worth it and we went down the block. McSorleys didn't close during prohibition, which I think is kind of fun. It's the only bar that stayed open all through prohibition in the country. The cops refused to raid it because it was a popular cop drinking place.
You can find bars/clubs in lots of areas, but for just walking around and checking out local places, the lower east is better and it's not even close, but for tourist spots, midtown is better.

I live in the US. I turn off the news for a few days, turn it back on, and generally I find it be much more insane than 3 days earlier, each and every time.

This is from a while ago, but my memories of McSorleys are of sawdust on the floor and a lot drunk, probably underage, catholic school kids drunk off their ass.

That could be. I haven't been there in, well, decades, since it became super popular. The last 2 times I tried to go the line was too long and I didn't bother. I still think it's a cool story.
If anyone wants to read about old NYC, 1920s/30s era, I recommend this book.
