Simple Suns / Spurs trade

Post#1 » by Mr Puddles » Sat Feb 1, 2025 3:42 am

Suns trade:
- Nurkic
- 2025 first rounder (Cleveland)

Spurs trade:
- Zach Collins
- 2025 second rounder (Spurs)
- 2025 second rounder (Bulls)

Contracts of the two bigs are similar: 2 years left, Collins 34,821,696 (total sum), Nurkic $37,500,000 (total sum).

Reasoning:

Spurs
Collins has fallen outside of the rotation, he gets swapped for Nurkic. The Spurs get a first rounder for taking on about 1.5 mil a year in extra money. This first rounder can be used in a potential Fox trade.

Suns
Suns get a playable big who can spread the floor. The 2025 first rounder will likely be no better than the 28th pick, and Chicago's and Spurs pick are currently 39th and 41st, so the trade down is minimal. Splitting the picks potentially gives them more trade flexibility, and money is saved on the NBA's most expensive roster.

As a fan of neither. Seems fair to me. The pick swap stand alone seems pretty close, with a little bit of $ savings mixed in to split the difference. S.A. maybe gets the more playable C, PHX gets 2 assets versus 1 to add in to deals, or add cheap replacements to a spendy roster.

I had Nurk for Collins straight up but other Suns fans didn't like the value. I think it makes a bit of sense.

I proposed a similar trade but without picks getting involved, but this is fine as well. It's probably trading the 30th pick for two picks in the late 30s, which is totally fine. I'd probably do this for the Spurs.

Suns need help right now and Zach Collins isn't it, it makes sense if it's a 3 team deal where the Suns get someone else and some team gets Collins (slightly cheaper) while Spurs get Nurkic (slightly better). But maybe by including the picks they can still flip Collins just like they could Nurkic.

Also, independently of this deal, Spurs and Suns probably be good trade partners for swapping picks, Spurs have too many firsts in the short term but could use some a few years from now (probably to deal them, but who knows); also, they have more seconds than they can count. The picks the Suns acquired are all but guaranteed to be late firsts, but still Spurs could offer 3/4 second rounders for one of them, which may help grease the wheels in more deals for the Suns. It's another option for the Spurs and Suns to consider.

I agree, but I don't see this as a one trade fixes all problems kind of deal. The Suns are reportedly very active on the trade market, outside of the Jimmy butler rumors, so I think they'll address their immediate rotation needs in trades elsewhere.

I see Collins more as a guy who isn't necessarily part of the 10 man rotation, but who the Suns can potentially throw out there with a "two big" line up next to Richards, Plump or Oso (or whoever their center is by then), as well as potentially playing small ball stretch 5 in some lineups.

So essentially swapping a playable player for an unplayable player at minimal cost.

Really? I consider Collins as having slightly more value than Nurk at the moment but maybe I'm overrating him. To the Suns atleast, he'd have more value than Nurk who is likely never going to see the floor again in a Suns jersey.

It's a swap of two guys fallen out of grace. The grass is greener on the other side I guess.

I could see this happening at the draft. Seriously what happened to Collins?

Well Nurkic has been pissing on the grass in PHX.
