He's broken too many injuries stunted his development. The best we can do is keep playing him until a trade option presents itself we can just wash our hands of him. And maybe for his sake something clicks, but as for us i'm sorry to say he will never be much here.

Remember he didn't draft himself 4, that's on AK and I know he didn't get injured on purpose. If we can realistically make it work, we should ship him to Sac to be with his mentor Debo.

IMO, his responses basically fall under the umbrella of “what the heck are you supposed to say when everyone asks you every game why you suck/don’t improve?”

He’s bad, but I’m not sure what he can say about it.

HomoSapien wrote:Sorry last post on this:

Here's Billy's quote on why he isn't playing Matas more. It's a little hard to follow, but he's basically making the case against entitlement minutes because he thinks it hurts a players' overall development. Here's the quote:

“I basically told him coming off the floor — ‘They are going directly at you. You're gonna have to make a stance here, yeah?'
...
“And he and I spoke about it today, you know? And he felt that he's got to be a player. We can't take a young player and say, ‘Okay, we're just going to try to hide him on these different players so he doesn't have to be exposed to that.'

I can't help but think he's talking about Pat in the bolded part. And I don't think he's taking a shot at Pat -- Donovan doesn't seem like that kind of person -- but I think he's seeing a failed development project and is trying to do things completely opposite with Matas.

This makes it sounds like he thinks Buzelis is a defensive weak link in the chain? That's delusional, If someone said that I'd say "you obviously haven't watched a single Bulls game with your own eyes" but I know Billy has watched them.

The best defensive ratings on the team belong to our two centers and then Lonzo & Buzelis (113 & 114). Patrick & Phillips are 117/118.

Tracking stats defended FG% at the rim:
Buzelis: 54.9%
Lonzo: 58%
Smith: 64%
Terry: 64%
Vucevic: 68%
Giddey: 73%
Phillips: 74%
Williams: 75%
Coby: 78%
Lavine: 83%

Donovan is a joke of a coach if he can't even take away the basics of why the team is winning or losing.

Yeah, but before this season looked like a competent 3&D role player. He has regressed to being awful and borderline unplayable.

I guess, to me these quotes show a lack of awareness. He hasn't done anything of note in this league but he's talking like he's a struggling star or something. I wish the quote was more about how they all believe he's capable of more than he's shown and that's why they are on him. I know that might seem nitpicky and I certainly don't think he's a diva behind closed doors or anything, but it's hard to fix something when you lack an understanding of the problem. Cowley recently said the coaching staff has found him difficult. That difficulty might stem from his lack of understanding of his own issues. He's concerned about getting more steals. That's just mind boggling.

Oh, i totally agree that Pat doesn’t seem to know why he sucks and isn’t improving, and that his answers reflect that. But when you are in that situation and people keep asking why you’re not performing, of course you’re going to answer with some platitudes.

I think Pat is likely a lost cause and I feel bad for him because he seems like he’s a nice enough guy, but he seems like the classic “you can’t teach someone without a motor to acquire one” situation.

I do take your point about the report of the coaching staff finding him difficult and I’ll be very interested if more detail comes out in that regard. He doesn’t seem like a diva, but perhaps he’s been resistant to coaching in one or more ways.

I'm going to support Pat here. I do think he's a worker, but he's clearly not the player he was (especially on defense), and I think it is 100% related to his inability to work in the offseason. I don't expect anyone to take him in trade at the deadline, and I think we'll see a moderate upswing in the second half of the season. Do I see a future allstar here, no, but I do think that he's got middling starter ability. Honestly, I think that Billy has pushed him to do more than he is capable of doing offensively and it f*cked with his head. Dude needs to spend the summer focusing on becoming a better defender and work on his handle, and just not try to finish at the rim next season.

And some of the blame is on whoever is trying to make Pat more "aggressive," either AK to justify the $90M contract or Billy for to justify his entitlement minutes.

Aggressive Pat is a disaster, stop pushing for it.

Well said. I don't blame them for trying the idea, but clearly he lacks the ability/skills to do it. And I imagine it's hard to reverse course and say to the kid, "um, you know that whole be aggressive thing we've asked you to do for the past 3 years...never mind."

I think this is just normal coach talk. They just want him to shoot the ball when open and pressure the defense when he has the opportunity to do so.

The tiniest of sample sizes (last 3 games) but he really does belong on the 2nd unit:

12.6 PPG, 8 RPG.

NBA fan logic we need to trade one of two best players because (Player X) one needs to shine more.

He's pretty much a sunken cost now, so the best thing is to build up his trade value to try and unload him at next year's TDL.

At this point, I'm rooting for us to trade Zach for Kuminga so that next season we can have a 3 forward rotation of Kuminga, Matas and Pat.
