Mavericks Trading Luke Doncic To Lakers For Anthony Davis

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Sun Feb 2, 2025 5:38 am

The Dallas Mavericks are trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis and a 2029 first-round pick in a blockbuster deal, sources told ESPN's Shams Charania on Saturday night.

Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris are also heading to the Lakers while Max Christie heads to Dallas, sources said.

"I believe that defense wins championships," Mavs general manager Nico Harrison told ESPN's Dave McMenamin regarding his motivation to trade Doncic for Davis. "I believe that getting an All-Defensive center and an All-NBA player with a defensive mindset gives us a better chance. We're built to win now and in the future."

Nico Harrison has to be one of the dumbest mfers to ever run an NBA team. Mavs fans are going to be at his neck, and he better be comfortable knowing that this is the last time anyone will ever trust him to be a GM of a major sports franchise. Dude is cooked.

This feels like a deal that is going to set Dallas back many years. Pretty unbelievable.

What an absolute idiot. "Defense wins championships". I guess Dirk was an all NBA defender
They could have received a historic haul of draft picks for Luka

I'm goddamn stoned enough that I genuinely had to check the calendar to see if that much of the year flew by already (April fool's)

Actually I'm not even that stoned this is just insane

Danny Ainge is asking for 10 1st round pick for Lauri Markkanen, Nets is asking 5 1st round for Cam Johnson, and list goes on and on. I am exaggerating I know, but a straight up trade for Luka? Yes he hasn’t won but he has more upside than AD. This GM was paid under by the Lakers and probably was promised something else. It’s like trading prime Jordan for Patrick Ewing during their prime.

They got better by a lot. Kyrie doesn't have to defer and you no longer have to worry about Luka's matador defense.

Kyrie / Dimwiddie
Klay / Grimes
PJ
AD
Gafford / Lively

That's a tough line up

The Luka-less lineup is so gross, no spacing and so little playmaking. This feels like an impulsive, spite trade. It makes negative sense.

I can't tell whether you're trolling or you believe yourself, but either way I'm not invested enough to argue with you. You could be right. I see the Mavs lineup looking like

Irving, Thompson, Washington, Davis, Lively

PJ's best position is at the 4, not the 3. And although AD wants to be a 4, his best position is at the 5, where they already have an elite platoon. Kyrie and Klay will get 3's up in bunches to source the floor as best they can, but neither of them are top tier playmakers. The bigs are not great in self creation / ISO type stuff. So, the whole offensive identity seems disjointed to me. In a loaded West, I see this backfiring for Dallas. And they don't even have training camp to figure it all out, such a massive shift in approach.

Everybody is sleeping on how much better this Mavs defense is gonna be, firstly obviously because of AD and Lively (when he's back), but also because of the great addition they got in Max Christie. He's a legit 3 and D player, and will probably take Klay's starting spot sooner than people think.

Kyrie
Christie
Washington
AD
Lively

Kyrie showed last postseason he can guard when he wants to, Christie is a 3 and D guy, so is Washington. That's enough size, shooting, switchability and ball pressure to be dangerous. AD is best with another big beside him (see Lakers championship year with Dwight and Javale), and has gotten better at helping to create for others this year. As of right now, Mavs definitely won this trade.

I dont get it. If they do this trade in the offseason… Okay. Retool some more, but now? What a weird trade and timing.
