Re: ATL - Luka+ for AD+
Lakers social hasn't mentioned anything yet, but the Mavs social team had graphics and a welcome message for AD right away this morning. Makes it feel like that org was done with Luka and wants to wipe their hands clean of him. There's got to be more to this story.

Now Dallas fans know how we felt when we traded Tobias.

And only Wemby, Giannis, Tatum would have made sense to Dallas. And since Doncic doesn’t make any amount of sense for spurs- it had to have been either Boston or Bucks.
If I were to take a guess, my guess would be if they contacted just one team it would be Philly for Embiid. I don't think anyone believes Giannis is available for anyone, even Luka.

side note: listening to windhorst and they did trivia on active 5 time all NBA guys and it took a good 15 seconds and a hint before they remembered Giannis....you know the guy who has been the second best play in the NBA for the past 7 years?
eta: went back and it was actually 40 seconds.

my conspiracy is if it's a zinger situation where some kind of legal trouble in the background. this trade is so bad my head jumped to that
Even if that’s the case, why not call OKC instead and quick get a bunch of picks? Why take a couple weeks to secretly make the worst trade ever?

But I am certificated Luka hater so....
Favored? No way
I think Luka is way overrated. He is terrible at defense and he is terrible for team offense. Selfish ego maniac.
Last year the Mavs won in spite of him. Lets remember they missed playoffs before that. Could you imagine prime Giannis missing playoffs? Or prime Jordan? Or prime Lebron? Or prime Jokic? Etc Last year they made incredible additions to frontcourt that made them great at defense and Kyrie was incredible in playoffs.
I dont really understand opinions today. This board is usually good at knowledge about PPG selfish guys who dont play defense.
Luka is fat white guy. He has 5 good years at most with that body. AD is MVP kind of impact when healthy.
This is incredible bold move by Mavs. Basketball aside Luka was franchise in terms of marketing and money. Making this move is revolution. Mavs are now instant my 2nd favorite team.

I say this drawing from an old adage in detective type books: If you have eliminated every other option, the one remaining option must be the truth, no matter how unlikely that seems to be.
Thoughts?
Yep. Massive punishment sending him to get massive endorsements. He loses the supermax no matter where they trade him. So why not get the biggest haul for him?

Wouldn't be surprised if this trade results in the supermax rules getting changed.

No shot it was Embiid. Dallas looks terrible in this so far but that would have been even worse.

I refuse to believe Morey turns that down.

Re: ATL - Luka+ for AD+
Mavs want to win this year. What better big is there? Jokic, Giannis, Wemby? Then what? i would say AD is next if you want to win now. If they are healthy you will see how good the Mavs are now.

Re: ATL - Luka+ for AD+
Here's what I can formulate as the basketball-only rationale for the trade:
If you were going to make a list of the best player on every NBA champion and ranked them, Jayson Tatum would probably be near the bottom of that list. But the reason the Celtics won was because it was a team that fit really well and lacked a really glaring weakness and the weaknesses individual players others were able to compensate for those. And maybe that's not going to just be an aberration, maybe the future is putting together a lineup that fits really well together instead of having 2-3 great players (even when sometimes those 2-3 guys aren't great fits) and filling in the rest of the lineup around them with spare parts. And if your playoff rotation is Kyrie, Klay, PJ Washington, AD and Gafford as your starters with Dinwiddie, Quentin Grimes, Naji Marshall and Lively as the reserves, I don't think that's a championship rotation but everything fits together really well.
All that said, I think this was because they didn't want to give him 350 million and probably think that at some point within the next 2-3 years his conditioning issues are going to start catching up with him.

They called us and asked for Giannis. Only that makes sense

Luka is 26 this month. Bird was done basicly at 32 and he was not fat.

Re: ATL - Luka+ for AD+
i can't believe anyone would try and rationalize this. this is now the single worst trade in sports history.
for any argument you have for moving Luka, which is completely fair, you cannot get over the fact that 28 teams did not know Luka was available. it is an astonishingly low return, all things considered. If Luka and AD were the same age, that's a different story. But there's no rationalizing this.

Espn's Ramona Shelborne wanted us all to know that Nico convinced Kobe to leave addidas for Nike and Pelinka was his agent at the time 25 years ago, so if you squint pretty hard this all makes perfect sense
