Read an interesting conspiracy theory that the league helped broker this deal to get Luka to LA since that is what's best for the league in terms of ratings and revenue, and the new Dallas owners will get support to move the franchise to Las Vegas (new owners are casino moguls).
Like others have mentioned already, it makes no sense to not shop around Luka.

If that was the reason wouldn't Chicago be the spot?

Yes. Adam Silver spoke years ago directly on the ratings problem. Silver said the WC teams, and in particular the CA teams are doing fantastic. Lakers, Golden State, even Clippers and Sacramento all in just one state make California the best NBA ratings by a massive margin. The problem is that it's one state out of 50.
The entire NW quadrant of the entire US has one freakin team, and it's the Blazers (they're working on getting another team up there). Incredibly dense population centers & TV markets like Chicago & NY were dead (pre Brunson NY).
He said the best thing for the NBA is for the Eastern Conference to get more watchable. Talent migration to the WC, and specifically CA, would be the worst thing for the league.
I wouldn't be surprised if years ago Silver sat down with Dolan & Reinsdorf and talked about this. NY succeeded wildly with their win now plan. Chicago landed with a belly flop.

This is worst than the KAT trade

Lebron needs a successor. No way Chicago is more important to the league than LA.

If the Mavericks franchise moved to Las Vegas they will blame it on low fan support after the Luka trade.

Thanks to Michael Jordan Bulls are a huge brand globally. I mean early Derrick Rose was almost a bigger global star then Lebron if i remember he was outselling LeBron by a lot in places like China. They are currently top 5 in merchandise sales despite the team being garbage.

I thought Vegas was a frontrunner for one of the expansion teams. If the two new NBA teams will be in Seattle and Vegas it wouldn't make sense to move the Mavs to Vegas.

The NBA is going to be in Vegas. But there is no way they are leaving the Dallas market to do it.

“We really feel like we got ahead of what was going to be a tumultuous summer, him being eligible for the supermax and also a year away from him being able to opt out of any contract,” Harrison said. “And so we really felt like we got out in front of that. We know teams, they’ve had it out there, teams have been loading up to try to sign him once that comes available.”
- Nico Harrison
Hard to believe this Dallas team had Luka, Brunson, and Porzingis at one point.

Nico Harrison is going to end up getting a cushy nothing job in the Lakers front office after he gets ejected from Dallas in 18 months, isn't he?

The sad part about it is, he may have set back the franchise 10 years and all that will happen to him is being fired.
This is like the Spurs trading Wemby for Bam Adebayo and filler.
Nico Harrison is public enemy #1 in Dallas.

Re: Luka to Lakers. AD to Mavs.
I will laugh my ass off when Luka, doesn't sign an extension now that he has lost his ability for the super max, goes to FA, and signs with his buddy Joker in Denver. In the end I dont see Luka learning $hit from James or wanting to be mentored. He has been a pro since 13 years old and entering his prime. James at 40 riding out the last years with his kid in LA doesn't sound great for Luka.

The Lakers are really handicapped trying to build a team around Luka at the moment, LeBron is taking up a bunch of capspace, I wouldn't be surprised if Luka doesn't sign an extension and joins Bam, Ware and Herro in Miami in 2026.
Here to argue about nonsensical things and suck away your joy.

It'll be interesting to see how all this plays out. On paper LeBron and Luka don't seem like a good fit. Plus LeBron at 40 years old....when will the wheels fall off? I know to some degree they already have, but not in a huge way.

Re: Luka to Lakers. AD to Mavs.
Yeah while the Lakers got Luka the Mavs actually end up the better team of the two.
The downside is while they will be a very good team, they aren't good enough to win a championship and justify trading Luka.
The Lakers are going to struggle more than Chicago defensively as well as trying to work out how Luka/LeBron works with only 1 basketball. They really need LeBron gone for this to work for them.

Re: Luka to Lakers. AD to Mavs.
The craziest thing to me is that the Mavs didn't shop Luka around the league and start a bidding war.
The Mavs are worth 4.7 billions. Imagine if they were another business (not sports) and they got rid of a guy who brings in 70% of the companies income, but didn't do their due diligence first...? That would get a long list of people fired.
