This was a case of two friends colluding. Nico was ordered to trade Luka, so he decided to help his friend, Rob, out.
He wouldn't have traded Luka for peanuts to anyone else.

There's a rumour floating around that the Adelsons did this to try and get their casino

Mavs fans have been talking about this from the moment the trade went down. It's by far the most plausible explanation.
The Adelsons are absolutely disgusting people on a personal level, so this kind of action is 100% on-brand for them.

I might be done with it, and I'm not even a Mavs fan. Every **** decade the Lakers get gifted a superstar, at the expense of a smaller market team. Every **** decade. This is just the most egregious example in a long line of corrupt transactions.
What Mavs fans are feeling right now is what Blue Jays fans felt when Ed Rogers fired AA after he took us to the ALCS, except even worse because a young superstar is more valuable than any executive.

Its absolutely disgusting whats happening, we have teams purposely losing just to have a lottery shot at a potential star meanwhile a team like the lakers has the benefit of superstars wanting to sign with them or they get stars basically handed to them in trades. They dont even have to consider building through the draft
Guys like Luka come along every 10 years, the fact he wasn't shopped for the best offer means their was colluding going on behind the scenes
Ill keep watching even though im less invested then i was before but i also know that the product im watching is deeply flawed whether its reffing or collusion. All of this just makes our 2019 championship all the more special and rare
But if im a mavs fan, i would definetely abandon watching the NBA

I'd love to see a rule change, where teams have to publicly announce that a player is on the market, and field offers from all interested teams. No more backroom deals. The NBA right now is run like the **** WWE.

I wonder if there's some sort of anti - "F'in up your franchise on purpose" rule among the owners that would be invoked if the Addelsons try and pull this move. They need 16/30 votes to move the franchise right? How many owners would be happy about supporting another owner who purposely tanked NBA revenue in one of the NBA's largest markets, revenue that could/should be shared with them, only to have them relocate a franchise so they can profit off their "main business" of gambling (for which they would see no revenue sharing)?
I think I'd be pretty pissed as an owner tbh. Though maybe they're placated by the solidified Lakers' popularity of the next 5-10 years. I dno how it all works, but it would seem to me that purposely tanking your franchise has to be against some sort of rules the owners/NBA BOG put in place. I imagine there might be some investigation into this trade down the road.

I doubt there is a rule like that. Most sports team owners are dirtbags. They all want to have the power to relocate on a whim.

The owners are all shady businessmen types though. The original backroom dealers. Even if there was such a rule and they fielded offers, they could just ignore the ones from people they're not buddies with.
This deal though...defintely stinks to high hell of collusion and/or some shady ish from Mavs ownership.

At least their corruption would be out in the open then. If you trade for 32 year-old AD + 1x FRP while Chet + 5x FRPs was on the table, fans would be showing up to the stadium to burn it down.

I suppose. And for that reason, it'll probably never happen lol.

If it were any team besides the Lakers or maybe Knicks reaping the benefits of such a superstar dump, there very likely would be. But as it stands, nope. Not gonna happen.

When we lost Carter to that awful deal that gave us scraps and a semi-valuable pick, our pain was spread out over time because we saw a trade coming. Still painful nonetheless, but we recovered.
Mavs fans though, no trade request, no tanking of trade value and still they get half value in return and they didn't even see it coming. Really hard to swallow.
Mavs youtubers talk of people having named their children Luka.
Maxpainmedia:

Exactly. It was understandable that we got scraps back in the Carter trade because Carter was publicly asking for a trade. When that happens, the team loses all leverage. Luka was clear that he wanted to stay in Dallas his entire career. The Mavericks had all the leverage in the world to get the best possible return for him, if they wanted to trade him, for whatever BS financial reason. They literally CHOSE to trade him for scraps.
