Cleveland/Detroit

Post#1 » by bgrep14 » Mon Feb 3, 2025 12:14 pm

Cleveland: Okoro and Lavert

Detroit: Thompson and Stewart

Cavs: get a bit more physicality at positions they require more depth.

Detroit: replaces Iveys production and get another versatile young wing while cutting long term salary to sign a player next year or take back more salary for picks.

You know Thompson was a recent lottery pick and is in the rising stars game during All-Star weekend, right? This isn’t close for Detroit. I wouldn’t trade just Ausar or just Beefstew for this package.

Just as a general note: Pistons are not looking to get off Beefstew’s contract, so any trade built on that premise is misguided from the jump.

Just to warn ya, Mods frown on this type of response. If you think a trade proposal is ridiculous, just give your reasons why, don't counter with an equally ridiculous offer.

I just don't think a tax team can pay Stewart that much to come off the bench when he's strictly a 5. If he could step out of the paint and play PF, you could justify his money as part of a three big rotation.

From the Pistons perspective, they're hoping that Okoro is Thompson's floor. They're not doing that part.

I wouldn’t say Stewart is strictly a 5, although that’s his primary position for sure. Regardless, the Cleveland package isn’t very enticing- feels like they are just dumping their garbage. And to include Thompson? His D is already special and worth keeping just for that. And his overall potential is sooooo much higher than Okoro, and clearly LaVerts best days are behind him. Pistons pass and block your number.

I don't think there's any statistical evidence supporting the claim that Levert's best days are behind him. He's a much better team player than he was when the Pacers traded him to the Cavs. He plays better off ball and gives far more effort on defense. The issue the Cavs have is Mobley's extension kicks in this summer, LeVert's on an expiring contract, and his market is likely to be higher than what the Cavs will be willing to pay as a team flirting with apron penalties.

Regardless of whether you'd say it, Stewart is strictly a 5. The Pistons tried him at the 4 last season and he was so limited away from the basket offensively, that opposing defenses packed the paint. The results this season speak for themselves. The reason that it's hard to find a Stewart trade that works is the Pistons don't see his contract as a liability given their current cap situation. Unless Duran takes a huge leap next season, that's not changing either.

I agree that the Thompson/Okoro has no chance.

Ausar.

This trade is a non-starter for Detroit. I don't see the value as close here tbh.

The Cavs fans can complain about how "Stew is too expensive to be a backup center" all they wish but that doesn't change the fact that this is terrible for the Pistons.

As to the latter, it's just misaligned value. Stewart has the highest value where he is.

$15 million/per with a rising cap over the next 4 years is just fine for a backup 5, especially when he essentially splits time with the starter right now.

The rationale doesn't even mention anything Ausar does as a positive for the trade. Does OP know who Ausar is or did they just use the salary?

As a percent of the cap, Stewart's salary over the 4 year contract:

10.67% 2024-25
9.7% 2025-26
8.82% 2026-27
8.02% 2027-28 (Team option)

His contract falls below the full MLE in 16 months, and there is a team option in the final year. That's outstanding value for a rotation player who can occasionally start.

While DET might choose to move on from Stewart at some point, he becomes more valuable as a trade chip as his salary becomes a smaller % of the salary cap.

For Detroit, I feel like this is a no. Stewart has his issues, undoubtedly, but he’s paid fairly and he does bring something to the team we need. Ausur is young enough, to where you’d want to see how his career plays out. It’d be nicer if he could shoot 3s, but I like his style/upside.

For the players we’d be getting. Caris is having a very solid season, but it’s reasonable to believe he’s hit the plateau of his career. If he was on a bad team and they just wanted to move on from him I’d be all about acquiring him.

Okoro, I’m not sure there’s really anything unique about his game. I feel like he’s about the “floor” of what you want Ausur to become.

I know there was some alleged interest in him on Detroit’s part during the offseason (Detroit still had money and his agents wanted to get as much money for him as possible, when he was among the last notable free agents available).

Issac is a decent/low attempts 3 point shooter, good defensive player. But he’s not the guy you go after in a trade in my opinion

Pistons already have Beasley and THJ as veteran shooting guards, plus I've got Ausar Thompson as a much more valuable prospect compared to Okoro. Not close to a fair trade. Easy pass.

I can understand Stew for Caris as a reasonable offer, but we’re not trading Stewart and the position switch imbalances the roster badly.

Okoro for Ausar is insulting.
