My job could tell me tomorrow I need to move cross country if I want to stay. But very rarely would it be as sudden as a pro sports trade where I have to up and go that day. And if it was, people would surely criticize and protest the company for being unethical. And if I refused, I can still go get another job with another employer in my field (non-competes notwithstanding which can sometimes be an obstacle but I believe were made illegal in most circumstances last year). Athletes don't have that choice. But their career field is unique in many ways, some more beneficial to them and some not so much. It is not slavery lol

Some pro athletes do have that choice, most notably soccer players, they can't be traded without their consent. Schroder is probably jealous of them in that respect, which is understanable, but comparing a NBA player's job to slavery is still idiotic.

I don't wanna get political here in the GB, but if you've been paying minimal attention to the news, Schroeder's nonsense doesn't even crack the top 30

I have been actively avoiding the news for exactly that reason.

Schroeder trying to contend with Bryce Mitchell for dumbest thing said by an athlete in 2025. Mitchell’s comments were worse, but at least with Mitchell we could blame it on CTE.

No one forced you to play in the NBA Dennis. What a painfully ignorant comment

He can always volunteer himself to Qatar, hand over his passport to build soccer stadium and ask himself if there is a difference.

There are points of comparison between trading players (in most sports leagues) to trading slaves but there are significant differences too. When players make the comparison to slavery, they have their lived-in experience of the disparity of power-dynamics between themselves and the owners. While we on the outside, mostly see the differences because we're made peace with the power-dynamics within our own lives.
Psychotic. It didn’t make sense. I don’t know how you make it make sense

He should be suspended for saying something this stupid and offensive. Open up a damn history book to read about the horrors African Americans had to live through only a few generations ago.

Unfortunately we’re still living a world where slavery exists. Look at the horrible conditions migrant workers (who have their passports taken away) have to work under in middle eastern countries like Kuwait, Dubai, and KSA. Horrific, dangerous jobs, in unimaginable heat for pennies. These workers often die from heat and dangerous work conditions.

No one is forcing him to go to a new team. Just refuse to report and the multi million $ contract gets extinguished. How is that slavery?

Well, of course hard to understand this difficult situation as a normal human being, where your employer can tell you from one day to another. "Well we are restructuring the company, so unfortunately we have to fire you." Or "Well we are closing the branch in your city, so either you agree to moving to another city, or we have to fire you." Or "Well we have to reduce the amount of people in your current role, so either you except a lower position for less pay, or we have to fire you."

The best part is of course that Dennis made this active choice, he could have just stayed in Germany, or pretty much any EU country, where trades are basically nonexistant. In Germany he might "only" earn the amount he makes for one NBA game for the full season, but at least he'd still be free.

Most guys just say its part of the business and it sucks but they suck it up.

As someone who has lost out on a lot big contract money I can sympathize with Dennis. He was finally able to be a lead guard on BKN and was putting up big numbers, he woulda got paid from that. Then they traded him, his opportunity for that payday is gone. GS won't have that kind of money to throw at him and he won't be able to pad his stats.

Not everyone is in it to win it. Some guys want as much $ as they can get and there's nothing wrong with that

What Dennis Schröeder means is all NBA contracts should be signed with a No Trade Clause. Now imagine it :x
