I drink a ton and use a lot of salt on my food. I am a bulky guy, broad chest, thick legs and big boned. I do have a beer gut but weigh way more then I look. I am 5 foot 10 and when I ask people how much they think I weigh they say 175, I gotta be 50 pounds heavier then that. This is interesting to me.
Let me put it this way, if you were to stop drinking beer (or the harder stuff) cut back on salt and drink a couple liters of water a day you'd be down 15 pounds in 2-3 weeks easy. Without any real exercise. Alcohol and salt both dehydrate you (though of course you do need some salt, especially in the heat). Both trick your body into thinking it's likely to dehydrate badly so the body responds by holding onto extra water. That's most of what a beer belly is, just water weight. Cut those two out, super hydrate with decent water and your body will start purging the water it's holding. Last time I had to do this it took about 2 days before I started waking up 3 times a night to take one of those marathon pisses that just keeps going... The body was purging water .
It's not just the water weight from booze. When do most people drink? At night. So what happens? The body metabolizes the alcohol first before the food in your system. By the time it gets to burning food, it's while you're sleeping when the metabolic rate is lowest. Hence the extra body fat on most people who drink alcohol, especially those who drink daily.
I bet near half of the obesity problem in adults in this country is due in large part to alcohol abuse. It's for the reason above plus many people make bad food choices while drinking.
I barley eat during the day and then drink heavy at night and eat heavy after smoke before bed. I know this is terrible for what we are talking about. I just do not care I guess. I do play ball almost everyday and lift weights. I am also in my 40s, so if I did not do those good things I would probably be a blimp. I do not have that fat face an alcoholic has. It is more just the beer gut.
