It's to save Harris money. I'm more hoping as a side benefit it allows them to sign Edwards to a deal now if anything, but we'll see.

I don't think it changes anything about being allowed to sign Edwards.
I thought they could only offer him the minimum, but now they can offer him a bit more. Is that not accurate?

Martin was never a contract that was signed to be positive value. It was a trade exception in player form.

What were the 2nds given to DET?

This does allow to covert Edwards and peruse the buyout market.

But again, this team sucks, there's no reason to push any more chips in.

Is it relatively easy to buy a 2rp for a couple million? If we just saved at least $4m, and we can avoid the luxury tax a bit, then we can buy back the 2RPs if we want them and still come out ahead. Is that what I'm hearing?

My only issue is that KJ's contract was unguaranteed, so I obviously rather have Harris pay the extra tax and keep the 2nds.

I didn't say it wasn't a good idea. It was an obersvation of how everything goes wrong with this organization, not necessarily a criticism of Morey on the KJ Martin move itself. If I had to blame anyone in particular for the trade, it would be Harris, but still. Signing a guy when the expectation is to trade him for a good player and you end up having to give up picks to dump him is just a bad look on the organization.
It gives fuel for haters, but it's small potatoes. Celtics just attached a second to get off of Springer after a year of trading for him. The difference is the Celtics are a contender and the Sixers are not.

They have a much bigger problem that's going to make the job hell for Morey or whomever the GM is for the next few years.

I'm more concerned about the repeated pattern in this organization of things never going to plan, never working out, and blowing up in their faces than this move in particular. If this move was made when the Sixers are 15 games above .500, who cares. But this is just yet another thing on a long list where situation after situation goes wrong.

From the Detroit Free Press:

The second-round picks the Sixers are sending are from the Milwaukee Bucks in 2027 and Dallas Mavericks in 2031, according to multiple reports. The Pistons will absorb Martin's $8 million contract this season into their room exception.

I don't see any reason they'd be able to offer more than the minimum now. They're still over the cap, and perusing the CBA, I don't think they have any other form of exception available to them.

That's cheap to dump almost 8M, avoid the tax, and ensure you get the payout from the tax teams.

I know, I know; nobody cares about Joshie's wallet. Still solid GMing. And again, this team is bad and is not winning anything.

So we have 13 on the roster with 3 two-way players? Obviously we're going to sign Edwards to a contract so he can play in the playoffs. That leaves us with one open spot on the roster (possible buyout) and 1 two way spot, right?

Thanks. In that case, no benefit for fans of the team then lol. I can't imagine any buy out candidate anyone would really care about. Ben would be funny I guess.

The Bucks trading Middleton to WSH for Kuzma to save money is interesting. The new CBA is going to dictate personnel moves more than ever. Bet Boston looks to move one of the J’s in the summer.

What I don't get is the direction for this team. Jojo probably won't play tonight. which makes it a loss unless PG rolls out of bed.

This team will make you pull your hair out. I hope something else happens over the next 24 hours as we got nothing for KJ. I don't know anything about Grimes, but that move doesn't help that much on the court. Feels like we are just giving up. I don't think giving up is a Philly mentality.

If GS is out on KD, does that mean that they are more likely to trade for PG? I imagine that PG would be the last domino to fall after KD and Butler.

I don't understand what the Suns are doing. The plan is to trade Kevin Durant and get Butler back? How does that make them better? If they're trading Durant, blow it up and start over or at least get picks to reload around Booker.

So we basically replaced the 2 Martins with Edwards and Grimes and we reset the repater tax.

I don't think we are weaker than the start of the year, espcially if Edwards keeps on developing.

This is a strange season: no chemistry and no health but we are 7-3 in the only 10 games when PG-Embiid and Maxey shared the floor together.

We have the NBA easiest schedule for the rest of the way so there's no doubt that we're going to the playin with a chance to get the 8th or 7th place.

I don't think Cavs, Celtics and Knicks will be so happy to battle against an healty Sixers team.
Well, Celtics maybe yeah but still...

I think Phoenix has every draft pick through 2030 tied up in either owned by another team or swappable by another team which probably reduces the interest in blowing up and being bad.

An acknowledgement that this is a lost year is good IMO. Definitely wouldn't want them making moves for this year that aren't future-looking. Not happy they spent a couple 2nd round picks to save money, but I get it.

Grimes gets a tryout to see if he fits. I think they retain him and Yabu next year. See if the young guys can progress enough for the team to have good depth. Hope Embiid's health isn't permanently screwed.
