Grange: Jordi Fernandez stepping away from Canada coaching job

Post#1 » by Brinbe » Wed Feb 5, 2025 9:33 pm

Jordi Fernandez is stepping away as head coach of the Canadian senior men’s national basketball team, Sportsnet has learned from multiple sources.

The longtime NBA assistant and current head coach of the Brooklyn Nets took over from Nick Nurse in the summer of 2023 when Nurse unexpectedly left the position due to a conflict with his then-new role as head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Well, this sucks. Jordi is a great HC and was perfect for the FIBA game. Hopefully the program can recruit a good replacement.

How about the Canadian dude that coached Germany that said he was open to the opportunity? Sounds like a slam dunk.

Yeah, I agree, assuming the front office isn't going to fire him, which they shouldn't. Or as mentioned maybe the German head coach who is Canadian is a better choice as he has no link to the Raptors.
When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

That sucks.

Step up Darko.

Germany coach is Gord Herbert. He has been an assistant with team Canada in the past. I think he was with the Raps at some point, too.

I am still not entirely sold on Darko as an NBA head coach (although the team actually playing defense lately has allowed me to start warming up to him.......need a bigger sample size)

Having said that, I think he would be fantastic for the National program. He is well liked around the league by players & does a great job of creating a positive environment. Both are huge when trying to get players to commit to the program.

Not really a surprise, now that Jordi's a head coach in the league.

I'm totally in favour of anything that brings Darko and Shai together for weeks at a time.
