Williams has really high potential as a two way center. Already can rim run and defend the rim. He also seemed to have a pretty decent outside shot in college so potentially he could become passable from deep in the future.
I would have easily traded the Bucks 2031 unprotected first for him.
That Lakers unprotected first is when Luka is only 31 years old. That’s a late teens at best pick. Probably late 20s if they sign another star when LeBron retires which they will because it’s LA and they get to play with Luka.
Williams has big time potential, but this deal could also blow up in the Lakers face because Mark Williams cannot stay on the court. 43 games as a rookie, 19 games last year, only 23 games this year. He could very well go the way of Robert Williams and just be a part time player who you can't really even consider as part of the team's vision/plans/strategy because the assumption has to be that he will not be available to play.
Still a great deal for the Lakers because they needed a center in the worst way and it has big upside.

They'll never allow us peasant franchises to sit at the big boys' table.
Denver, Toronto and Milwaukee all won a chip this decade.
San Antonio got the most highly regarded rookie in at least the last 20 years.
Oklahoma City and Cleveland are the favorites to win it all this year.
League can't do anything against teams that draft well or get lucky in the lottery, sure. When it comes to the trade market though, these dudes always have their thumb on the scale. We weren't even allowed to have Bogdan Bogdanovic, man...

Charlotte has also been a **** ton worse with Williams on the floor vs. his minutes on the bench. He's a good prospect for sure, and it's entirely possible he blossoms and this trade looks horrible for Charlotte, but it's also not hard to see it going the other way.
LA desperately needed a big man though and he should feast at least on the offensive end with Luka and Lebron throwing him passes. In the good moments, Williams looks like a potential two-way star, but as is often the case with young centers, he can be a bit of a mess sometimes.

Luka's gonna turn Mark Williams into an All-Star. Only worry is obviously his durability stuff the last couple years.

He got 70 million extra. Plus a better chance to win. He got what he wanted.

Every trade deadline, I imagine that Luke Ridnour is sitting on his couch, staring into the void, recalling his personal Vietnam.

I don't know how much the table really matters, though.
League didn't allow the CP3 to Lakers trade to consummate. Like that's probably the most prominent example of the league stepping in, right?
As for who constitutes the league's "big boys," who are they? I'd say there's 8. NYK, BOS, MIA, LAL, LAC, GSW, CHI and PHI, but there's even a hierarchy within that. It's really BOS, LAL and NYK and then a drop down. Any of the other teams are dependent on recent success and could not weather a fallow period like that trio. If the Dubs have a decade of mediocrity, they're what the Bulls are now.
I'm sure the league and its broadcast partners ("And we lead off today's show with the Lakers") are inclined to hope these teams rise to the top, but any efforts for them to manifest success into existence seem mixed.
And also: stop pushing the charisma vortex that is Jayson Tatum into face of the Assosh territory. Fetch isn't going to happen.

He would have had a chance to win a playin game with the heat... now he has a chance with the warriors. lateral move IMO.

I miss that Curry player on the Heat.
The Warriors to players have won. Nobody on the Heat has and if you do not realize that experience is incredibly important in the playoffs.
:Shrugs:
Plus the extra 75 million. How is this lateral? He got a better teammate and extra money. Jimmy got what he wanted.
He said he wanted to get paid. He could careless about being patted on the head like Wade.

I don't see this as a bad trade for Charlotte at all to be honest, it's one of those rare wins for both sort of. Like has been mentioned, Williams has been hurt nonstop so far, and the team has sucked when he's been on the court vs when he's been out despite the boxscore numbers. They'd be in a position next year where they would have to offer him a big extension and there's still a lot of uncertainty if he's worth that due to the injuries/impact so far and not a lot of time inbetween to get a more clear picture of how good he actually is/will be. They know they are going to eventually have to max Brandon Miller for sure in 2 seasons as well. Getting a capable role player on the 1st year of his rookie deal with a swap and unprotected 1st is exactly what the Hornets should be doing, add another prospect in the draft this year, and then look to trade for a proven star talent to augment the roster when one becomes available with those future picks.
Lakers obviously it makes sense for, they are all in now so the picks don't matter, and they needed a center desperately. Also, it's not like they could have played a dangerously Caucasian lineup of Reaves/Luka/Knecht and been viable defensively anyway.

Nobody's won on that Heat team that's been to two finals in the last five years and been to another ECF?
