It's just frustrating to look back and see we had:
Paul
Booker
Bridges
Crowder
Ayton
With Cam Johnson showing some real promise, and our future picks intact...
...yet just because we took the Mavs to 7 games, and lost, everything that followed, all the decisions made, did nothing but snowball into the mess we have today...it's just depressing...
How the heck did 'we' ever think that trading our picks away, with Bridges and Johnson, for the 'honor' of bringing Durant in...
Then essentially swapping out Ayton for Nurkic, and dumping CP3...
Nothing since then has moved us forward; we've just regressed--gotten older, worse, and with less flexibility for the foreseeable
future, yet the Lakers somehow pull off a total coup by grabbing Doncic for pennies on the dollar.
Yep, I long for those day again...
Those days were nothing without a healthy CP3.
That being said it's wild to me how some easily forget how injured the entire WC was during that run thru the conference then got backdoor swept by the Bucks in the Finals.
Everyone kept babbling in media how the Suns were expected to be back - but it was so short sighted. Suns were always dancing a fine line with CP3's age and the team showed they weren't those guys when they got historically ravaged by the Mavs in that Game 7.
I don't fault the FO for trying to upgrade from that treadmill team and getting somebody with some pedigree next to Book. It just didn't work and neither would have that nucleus people like to romantically recall.
Oh, I don't fault them, either, for trying, but I do fault them for the actual moves they made. Sure, maybe we got blown out in game 7, in the semi-finals, but we've done nothing but regress since then. Rather than learn from being heavily dependent upon an old player as a critical starter, we decided to double down, by keeping and NOT trading this older player, Paul, no, no...we keep said old player, add two more 'old players', one expected to be our marquis player, who was already broken at the time, and trade away two 26YO critical players in Bridges and Johnson, FOUR FRPs, and an FRP swap...
So we can debate whether or not a move should have been made, but if you, as a fan knows that Paul and his age was a big factor in our failure, why didn't they 'fix' the failing piece, while leaving the highly productive, and young 3-and-D players, on our roster.
So, Durant played all of 8, of the 24 games that he was with the Suns, following the trade, in the regular season, and though he played in all of the playoff games that year, he obviously was not in prime condition, and was wore out by the end of the Denver series, failing to shoot even one 3pt shot in those final two losses. In fact, he was a net positive in just 1 of the six games against Denver.
The next year, we were blown out in the 1st Round by Minnesota, 4-0, a -20 or more net negative in three of those losses...and this season, well...
Point being, we gave up very fruitful young players, and 5 other potential draftees, so while I don't mind trying to better the roster, maybe from here out, we better the roster by replacing the pieces that are the negatives, instead of the positives...
