2025 Buyout season

Post#1 » by THE J0KER » Thu Feb 6, 2025 11:34 pm

Our Front Office sends a strong message during the 2025 Trade Deadline
about eventual roster improvements for a title contender:

Will the same policy stay about buyout season which according to new rules
can also be remarkable following the spectacular 2025 Trade Deadline example?

I did some research, and here are some of the potential buyout candidates, several of them can be used even in playoffs.

Atlanta: Larry Nance
Brooklyn: Ben Simmons and Bojan Bogdanovic
Charlotte: Seth Curry and Taj Gibson
New Orleans: Bruce Brown and Kelly Olynyk
Oklahoma City: Daniel Theis
Orlando: Gary Harris and Cory Joseph
San Antonio: Patrick Baldwin Jr
Toronto: Chris Boucher, Garrett Temple and PJ Tucker
Washington: Malcolm Brogdon and Khris Middleton

I just don't believe our front office will sign anyone: paralysis by analysis.

Our big issue is that being over the salary apron, we can't sign anyone whose salary was over $12.822 million. This eliminates us from Ben Simmons, Malcolm Brogdon, Bruce Brown, etc.

The other thing I'm not sure of is if us releasing someone to sign someone else will put us into the second apron. Thats probably not where we want to be with the multi-year second apron penalties for a player that probably won't move the needle much.

Some guys we might be interested in are:
-Kelly Olynyk
-Lonnie Walker
-Daniel Theis
-Chris Boucher
-PJ Tucker
-Torrey Craig
-Javonte Green
-Mo Bomba
-Monte Morris
-David Roddy
-Josh Richardson
-Alex Len
-Vasilije Micić

Not a very popular name to add, but talent-wise I'd throw out Bones Hyland just got waive by ATL. If he can prove his head is right, he could be a spark plug off the bench.

Olynky would be a HUGE piece and massive upgrade/fit easily the best name to get and a high IQ guy who can play with Gordon/Jokic, adds shooting IQ would be a dream pick up
Thies is ok
Boucher - meh can't see him doing much come playoffs
Tucker- can't space has not played in forever
Javonte Green- elite athlete and energy I mean if nothing else is available maybe a super poor version of Bruce Brown
Monte Morris - Not against it
David Roody - meh
Josh Richardson - low IQ and injured
Alex Len- not better than DJ
Micic- ball hog, can't d and can't adjust to the athleticism of NBA players big no.
Mo Bamba- worse than. Bol Bol zero heart given every chance and despite then physical gifts utter rubbish and soft player.
Walker , have not seen him play in ages

I'm a fan of Monte Morris and Bones Hyland would be a decent choice; but our biggest need is a BIG.

In order of preference (my opinion): Kelly Olynyk or Chris Boucher, <gap> Mo Bomba or Alex Len. There are options available and most of those guys would sign for a chance to play on a solid contender.

But I do not believe the Nuggets will sign anyone.

Chris Boucher is the player I would be interested in acquiring but he hasn't been released so far, I think. The Raptors have little cap space and at age 32 with an expiring contract of 10 mil, they can't keep him at the end of the season. Until then they can and he is playing in their rotation.

To acquire him the Nuggets would have to make a trade and the Raptors would have little interest in any players Denver would be willing to move (i.e. Nnaji and now too late). In other words, can't see this happening and you are right about the Nuggets being unlikely to sign anyone.

I think Olynyk is done.

We do need a big though.

I can only see Boucher and Larry Nance as potential targets (buying out Cancar). We only need a backup big, specially now that Nnaji is playing PF (his natural position).

FO thinks Gordon will play backup C in Play Off. Only these two guys are interesting, but they might not be available and that could be the reason why Cancar was not move at the deadline

Cancar is on a veteran's minimum salary contract and one of the smallest on the Nuggets. He also is the only Nugget with a no trade clause. In other words, he is/was untradable.

If they were to release him, they could only bring in the same type of contract player due to their cap issues. That is a possibility if either Boucher or Nance agree to a veteran minimum contract. They can probably get more elsewhere.

Cancar is the obvious buyout move, only played 4 gave over the past two years but he still is one of Jokic's buddies. He's unlikely to play this season, so whether he's rehabbing here or elsewhere it seem irrelevant.

I am in agreement that we need a big, and the three options seem Olynyk, Boucher and Nance. To me, Olynyk seems the best choice, he's got good playoff experience, has a high BBIQ and could provide some leadership as well. All 3 of these guys will only last through this season's playoffs as Holmes will easily replace them next year.

Olynyk is not expiring, he wont be bought out.

Cancar is useless and he costs over 4M$ to management, there was no point in keeping him in the roster apart from his NTC (and Jokic's friendship)
