Both have approaches which favor them that year. So unless you're willing to make an argument for one methodology being more useful for the comp than the other (which would require actually understanding the stat), your case for Steph boils down to ad-populum.

Regardless, no. "A vast majority chose this approach" does not actually justify said approach. Especially when these "majorities" are generated by dismissing less convoluted versions of the things that produce outputs you like, making arbitrary decisions on which samples are irrelevant, and conveniently flipping between caring or not caring about the sizes of samples. Granted, that approach mighr have been convincing for participants in the 2010 iteration of the RPOY. Unfortunately, this is 2024, and this sort of lazy selective metric-stacking just doesn't cut it anymore.

I agreed with a lengthy post by Djoker, in which Djoker did not even mention any 187 minute sample but that OhayoKD believes very briefly referred back to prior discussion in which OhayoKD complained that Djoker’s arguments in small part relied on a 189 minute sample.

Yeah, I think we're done here.

The good news for you is this project stops at 2014. If it hadn't, it's hard to see Steph's lone POY win not being taken by Lebron; probably in no small part because of you.

Anyway let's make this quick. I want to crack out 2009 Lebron's defense before work picks up.

After what is an all-time dominant 2012 postseason...with the big three starting, you have flashes of an all-time dominant regular-season team though that true top 10 ever sort of conversation is dashed by Wade's failing legs. He has unacknowledged weaknesses relative to earlier Lebron's largely in a service of a narrative built to discredit that earlier empirically unrivalled (barring Russell, Walton, and Jabbar) prior iteration, but it's fair to reason fit and teammate health dragged him down a bit, and credit him for being able to translate to a defensive role unusually paint-heavy for natural wings, and a different sort of offensive role.

Ultimately though what cements this year as historic is the postseason, especially the finals:

The 13/14 Spurs were the new and improved 89/90 Pistons. Wade was a shell of himself. And Lebron's jumper was off. You're supposed to lose that. Miami won. Primarily because Lebron is far more than his points+true-shooting, to an extent no other perimiter player has ever really come close to. And also because with the chips down Lebron was phenomenal. The 2013 Heat posted the 2nd highest 4th quarter net-rating ever post 97. 2nd to the 2009 Cleveland Cavaliers, and a few spots above the 2008 and 2010 Cleveland Cavaliers. Ray Allen hit "the shot". but "the shot" only mattered because that 4th quarter/overtime had Lebron creating or scoring nearly all of Miami's offense, shutting down guards and forwards alike as their primary perimiter deterrent, ontop of a bunch of possessions operating like his team's primary big or secondary big defensively.

Then he was dominant again in game 7. And, facing all-time competition, far from their best and whole selves, Miami prevailed. During the playoffs as a whole, with their 2nd best-player falling apart, Miami maintained:

A raw PSRS spike, counterbalanced by a 4-spot drop in rank. Considering the circumstances, that's rather impressive. Defeating the Spurs in the finals; that's just straight impressive.

There was already a gap between Lebron and the rest in the regular-season, but it grew during the playoffs, before a chasm over the course of the finals.

Simply put, this should be unanimous.

2. Kevin Durant/b]
3. [b]Chris Paul

Durant started a bit of a habit for himself these playoffs: Folding under an inch of adversity. The +9 SRS Thunder entered the playoffs and through 2 games with Westbrook played better than +9 SRS basketball and went 2-0 up. It was good they did that because over the next 4 games they played the +4 SRS Rockets close to a dead-heat and prevailed going 2-2. Then facing Memphis, Durant's pristine efficiency was nowhere to be found as the +9 SRS thunder played negative srs basketball to lose in 5 to a team that would proceed to get annihilated by a losing finalist.

Facing the same opponent, Chris Paul shot much better and his team stole an extra game. He shot much better, as he did for the playoffs, and he has a decent enough impact argument making the Clippers go from 6-6 to 50-20 (41 to 59-win pace) and generally placing significantly higher in RAPM. Still, going to go with Durant considering

-> Chris paul averages 4 less RS minutes and 7 less playoff minutes
-> Chris Paul's assists drop
-> Despite the additional win(and a co-star available in some capacity all 6 games) CP3's team performs about the same using M.O.V
-> A modest arrival signal that's probably inflated by teammate improvement (5-points, 17-wins) followed up with a year of team-wide regression

4. Tim Duncan

Best player on the team I just hyped up though it's an ensemble effort as reflected in Duncan not being the Spurs minutes lead for the RS or playoffs.

5. Steph Curry

Strong on-ball playmaker and a solid scorer who goes off in the playoffs. The Warriors upset a 57-win Nuggets team (led by future teammate Iggy) with Steph playing excellent. The Warriors then push San Antonio to 6 in a competitive series (4-point M.O.V). Steph shoots very badly and I'd say for most of the year this Warrior team borders on ensemble-ish...but I have Steph as the best player and he was by far the best for a signature upset and a contributor for a team that provided a genuine challenge to a legitimate juggernaut.

Getting in under the wire...

1. LeBron James

Obviously - argued by some as his peak season, won his second consecutive title/Finals MVP.

2. Kevin Durant

High volume, high efficiency scorer throughout the season.

3. Chris Paul

Big box and impact numbers in both RS, big box numbers but poor impact numbers in the PO. You wish the he and the team had performed better in the playoffs, and that gave me some pause, but his RS is strong enough to warrant #3.

4. Marc Gasol

Gasol and Conley both put up great numbers, but I'm giving Gasol the nod for anchoring the defense.

5. Steph Curry

Not solely, but largely on the back of his playoff performance, upsetting the Nuggets and taking two games off the Spurs. Really the season where Steph becomes Steph, imo.

HMs:

6. Mike Conley

Formed a formidable one-two punch with Gasol. Was +16.1 with 3.22 RAPM in the RS(highest RS RAPM of anyone considered other than LeBron).

7. Kawhi Leonard
8. Tim Duncan
9. Tony Parker

Everyone keeps saying how this Spurs team was an ensemble cast, yet then keeps giving all the credit to Duncan with Top 5 votes. Parker's impact numbers surpass Duncan's in the RS, and Kawhi's blow Duncan's out of the water in the playoffs. Great, great team, but it was an ensemble effort, and I disagree all the Top 5 votes for Duncan.

10. Paul George

Strong impact numbers in both RS and PO, probably the best player on a team that got one game away from beating the Heat and getting to the Finals.

11. James Harden

Monster box numbers in the RS.

12. Carmelo Anthony

This was the Knicks' best season with Melo; They were 47-20 with him and 7-8 without him, and he led the league in scoring.

13. Kobe Bryant

HIs last relevant year. But less impressed with his season than others.

1. Gasol - Anchored the #2 defense in the league.
2. Duncan - Spurs were the #3 defense; almost put Kawhi here because he had higher DRAPM in the PO, but Duncan's was a bit higher in RS, so he gets it.
3. George - 1.47 DRAPM in RS, 1.31 DRAPM in PO, elite defensive wing on the league's #1 defense.

1. Lebron- my peak year for bron and one of he greatest seasons ever, no contest.
2. KD- continues to be the 2nd best player in the game with an excellent regular season campaign where he improved his non-scoring attributes. Had a middling series losing to the Grizz, but I don’t really see a variable alternative to him.
3. CP3- excellent regular season campaign and a great effort vs the Grizzlies albeit he did lose in the first round which is underwhelming. With the criteria of the POY project good argument to be made that Duncan should be 3rd but I do think at this point CP3 was quite a bit better as a player, so idk.
4. Duncan- crazy that he’s still this relevant but he is the centerpiece of an excellent Spurs run. Could prob argue TP over him but both for on court and off court reasons I think he makes the most sense.
5. Gasol- not a particularly convincing choice but I do think given the Grizzlies success rewarding the best player on the Grizzlies makes the most sense and as such giving Gasol the nod here. Kobe is tempting even with the missed playoffs but I can’t overlook that with viable alternatives.

Great season for LeBron. Almost certainly the league's best player. I think his defense was not very dominant. It was very good, but how close he came to DPOY is a bit absurd.

There were some really good big man defensive seasons that year. That he had to actually deal with directly in the playoffs no less. Larry Sanders, Tim Duncan, Joakim Noah. His offense held up pretty damn good considering.

Chris Paul is a clear #2.

Westbrook and KD were playoff equals. Which was a constant trend in that era between them as teammates.

5.52 – Parker driving collapse the heats defense so lebron become a roamer to deny the passing lane to tiago and Duncan. 6.22 – Lebron zoning on kawhi while parker drive on haslem and bosh ( get a kick ball ). Spurs reset the ball , lebron seeing Duncan mismatch on dwade so he help denying the ball in the paint and help wade get the interception ball for Duncan ( HPD1 EHPD1 OBD3 EOBD2 )

22.24 – Bron close up on tiago offball when he left wide open cause birdman was helping allen. Then bron go close out on kawhi when kawhi get the ball. Kawhi drive with lebron tight on him but kawhi fake and spin jump shot which lebron can not contest in time. Kawhi make shot ( OBD6 PPD6 IPPD2 DUCT3 )
23.07 – lebron zone parker lane so parker pass to kawhi which lebron closes out to stop kawhi drive attempt and force to pass. Lebron go roam near tiago cause birdman overhelp to much. Kawhi get ball back so lebron close out and cover his drive tight to the basket . Kawhi find tiago for a foul ( PPD7 EPPD2 PP6 OBD7 )
24.39 – lebron offball guarding on other court side when nell attempt a 3pt but miss

This is a tremendous amount of work put into charting/tracking a game. I wish we could get a stickied thread just for these types of posts as I’d love to go back and watch some of these games while looking at the tracking notes.

With some discussion about relative ORtgs in another thread(s), I wanted to point how remarkable James was as an offensive engine with Wade off the court. In the 2012 post season, a healthy Wade synergized well with James as he did in the regular season, but the late season injury made Wade dead weight for the Heat offense in the 2013 playoffs.
