Trae Young

Post#1 » by Astaluego » Fri Feb 7, 2025 1:14 pm

Hawks getting rid of their veterans, it seems like they are reorganizing, I guess they will be open to listening to offers for Traey (if he doesn't ask to leave first) especially having a good year... What teams would be interested and what offers would the Hawks receive?

Orlando should definitely be in the mix. They have two firsts this year and they don't have a year where they don't have a first so they could offer up a ton of their own picks to hopefully slot in Trae with Suggs, Wagner, and Banchero.

It would definitely push them into the apron with Banchero's pending extension though.

Trae Young is having a good year, maybe I'm not reading that correctly?

The problem is the money, he is a free agent after next season and will expect a max contract, with Wagner and (shortly) Banchero there as well, it'll be hard for the Magic to keep the rest of their guys and round up a roster. Besides, Trae is a very streaky shooter that wouldn't solve the Magic's problems there, in fact he might complicate things by taking up a large chunk of the money available to address it. If I'm the Magic, I look elsewhere.

I like Trae, but he is having a horrible year. I think his value has diminished since last year. I use to think he could quarter back a top ten offense like nothing, as Atlanta has been top 12 in just about every year he has been there. That cratered this year, but they have had so much roster turnover and injury issues, declining veterans, you can excuse it. This is a classic example of going all in, way too early.

It seems like their GM group has no idea what it is doing. They lucked out on the #1 pick, but they probably should have traded it for win now pieces. Trae demanding a trade, or walking in FA, seems to be an inevitability. You would think that would be fine, they could get some good pieces for Trae and tank, but they can't because of their pick situation.

The primary issue is the Hawks are in such a bad position with San Antonio, I don't know if Trae is worth the cost of going and getting those picks back. Hawks cant tank without those picks. They could trade Trae for win now players and try and ride out the pick debt, but that is still a mediocre path.

I would love to trade for Trae, but I would offer a pick based package, and I don't know how that would work, unless you could flip those picks for win now pieces. I suppose you could buy up the mid players from the fringe teams (Portland, Utah, Brooklyn, Toronto), but I would hate that as an Atlanta fan. There is a nightmare situation looming if Trae asks for a trade, because you arent getting those SA picks back.

I like the one in NOP (if they can move Murray somewhere else). Mccolum/Olynyc/FRP 2025 (if they fall out of the top 3)

Trae is in that group of unique, intriguing, flawed players that I’m not sure it’s possible to build a champion around. Unlike, say, Randle, Trae does have the ability to get scorching hot as a shooter and playmaker and just win big games, and he’s done it before.

In reality, though, he’s not a particularly good shooter, and obviously his physical limitations mean he’ll never be even a decent defender. How do you build a legit contender featuring a max guy whose two elite skills are drawing fouls and playmaking?

If you think about it, he’s an awful lot like tiny James Harden.

He’s not shooting it well, is still a garbage defender. But he is very good at running an offense.

If in the Hawks im targeting a certain draft pick for him to get a guy lotto I really like.

I think this guy is going to leave for a big market so Hawks should cash in and maybe should've already, but he is hard to fit so it's understandable the perfect trade wouldn't have been there.

Earlier this week I was told how much more everyone valued him than DeAaron Fox, so the offers should be massive according to that feedback.

I get that this is Realgm and subject to hyperbole, but Trae is not having a horrible year.

I thought the same thing, but I didn't say anything... because I didn't watch many Hawks games... It seemed to me that he was showing an altruistic, selfless game more focused on the team... than on his own numbers and the result is he is leading the league in assists and has been making his teammates better.

For a guy who should be entering his peak, he absolutely is.

He has declined across the board, 3pt shooting down 30pts, FG% down 30pts, turnovers way up.

He has essentially cratered on shooting anything outside 16ft.

Yep, I can't look at someone shooting 40% from the field and try to say they are having a good year.

He's also averaging a career-high 11.5 assists per game. Yes, his efficiency is down, but he's obviously being asked to shoulder a very heavy load offensively.

his shooting is pretty horrible this year, and he has never been a "great" shooter anyways

Most of Trae's impact doesn't come from shooting though. He is an A-Tier playmaker, probably Top 10 offensive player in the NBA, and that is predicated on his playmaking and passing ability.

Sorry, but if you're shooting 40% from the field, you are not a top 10 offensive player in the league. He's a great creator, but a garbage shooter. Can he cut down on his attempts and still be as effective of a creator?

This is exactly how I’ve felt about him too.

And to further this, he seems like a guy very hard to make work as your number two even if you have an amazing number one, or another 1a/1b.

The ideal literal and specific fit would have been San An, but Fox and Sacto squashed that.

Trae is one of those guys that you can’t win with if you give him a max 3rd contract. He’s a step above Lavine but in that group of guys you can’t max anymore in the new NBA.
