Steph and Wiggins had positive value and would have fetched rebuild-friendly assets. Now Wiggins is gone, a pick is gone, Steph will lose a lot more value in the 2nd half of this season, and we have a 36 year old Butler locked up for 2 years. It's a huge step backwards and will delay the rebuild needlessly.
I agree but they've made it clear they aren't doing that and the time to do it was several years ago anyway.
They were never, ever trading Steph. A mixture of loyalty and business; Lacob would have been crucified by the fanbase and Steph really does sell. Warriors games are full, casuals still come to see Curry. Steph is still #1 in jersey sales. So I really don't think trading Steph is even a realistic discussion.
I would have preferred to move Draymond and sweeten the deal a bit so that we don't have 3 35+ guys on the roster, but here we are. We'll get some fun before the guys retire, and the path forward is set. In terms of assets, it could have been much worse -- we could be the Suns with some wild all-in trade. And from reports if we got Durant, the package was huge. And Wiggins, would he fetch a highly protected first? Maybe. We didn't bite on Vuc. 2.5 seasons and then rebuild time, enjoy your final moments with a Steph/Dray team. The cost is maybe 2 protected FRP and of course time -- it could have been *much* worse.
But yeah, 2 years ago was the time for a big trade to give Steph another offensive shot creator.
