Rivera probably will close but the Yankees will regret it.
The 15 mil annually is for what Rivera was, not what he is. The Yankees are paying Giambi more than that to sit around and get fat. The money is irrelevant.

I watch quite a few Yankee games, plus every playoff game. I can see for myself that Rivera has lost somnething on his cutter. The Red Sox do not fear him at all.

Well rappa, if you want to practice self-delusion, I can't stop you. The fact is that the Sox pen is better, if only because of Papelbon. The question, once again, is what the Yankees plan to do about it.

I know that the Red Sox are World Champions and the Yankees were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs. Maybe the Yanks ought to think out of the box a little, because they haven't won since 1999.

The reason the Red Sox are a better team is because of their starting rotation 1-5, and the fill ins they have. They also hit the ball in the postseason, something the Yankees did not do. The teams are virtually even top to bottom outside of starting pitching.

Rivera allowed the Red Sox one earned run after April, included are 8 of 10 appearances.
Its only the facts but as I recall the Yanks pretty much owned the Red Sox in the second half, the issue isn't head to head.
In comparison Papelbon faced the Yanks 3 times after June 1, allowing 3 earned in 3 1 innings, going 0-2 with a blown save.
In the end it doesn't mean a thing but if the Sox had the Tribe in the first round they would have gone home too.

Fixed.
Seriously though, the Yankees problem is not relief pitching. It is not the reason the Yankees haven't won in 7 years, starting pitching is the reason. And if Joba becomes an ace starter, that will win us a lot more games in hopefully championships in the next decade than if he becomes a dominant closer.

Well I should have said 2000. No matter. The Yankees haven't won for a variety of reasons. Each year it's different. The one recurring theme has been the inability of the middle of their lineup to produce runs in the postseason.
But the fact remains that Rivera isn't the pitcher he used to be. He'll be 38 years old. If the Yanks do move Chamberlain into the rotation, I predict that they will be scrambling around for additional relief pitching at midseason.
Another thing they need is a lefty specialist. The last good one they had was probably Graeme Lloyd.
