I'm done with Masai

Post#1 » by Ssj16 » Sat Feb 8, 2025 6:22 am

I've defended him up until this season because of what he did for his first 9 years in Toronto but not tanking to try and get into the Wemby sweepstakes is almost unforgivable and between the moves he made last year combined with this trade deadline, I think he needs to go and Toronto needs a new GM at the helmet.

I think he's trying to get into the Flagg sweepstakes by tanking but not racing for the worst record so painfully obviously that he hopes the NBA rewards him. Or maybe he's sick of being a GM and secured his own firing by pulling a Nico Harrison but with less backlash

He's been terrible from 2022-2024, but I'd still take him over the majority of executives in the league just based on his scouting ability. Execs that know how to draft well are rare.

His problem is he hates tanking and loves trading away FRPs. He actively works against his own strengths, which is so bizarre.

Honestly it's looking more likely that he got lucky that one time. Have never been impressed, he's seemed overly egotistical and lacking bball IQ in interviews.

He's more suited to a commercial role with NBA-Africa to be honest. Help build that thing up.

Raptors just won't rip the band-aid. They need one more Barnes and a bigger Dick literally and figuratively.

Masai has had a great season - team is in the thick of the Flagg race yet has lots of young talent.

He's not the GM, Bobby is. He's the President of Basketball Operations.

What do you expect? Toronto to be a contender every year?

why not wait until the draft lottery to see where we end up in the 2025 draft?

if we get lucky at the draft lottery and get a top 3 pick, everyone will be calling Masai a genius

if we don't and fall to 8th or later, then you can call for Masai to be fired if next season is filled with injuries to Quickley and Ingram

Does a good job picking up talent in the draft, his one saving grace.

I think his job is harder than most in that most American born players/stars would be happy to be traded to and or sign as a F/A with the Raptors.

Lets be real, there was no timeline in which Wemby would be a raptor. The league was barely able to stomach Kawhi being in Canada for 1 year

The best player in a draft has been taken outside the top-5 many times. I'm willing to give any player he drafts with a top-10 pick a chance. If anyone can find a gem in that 5-10 range, it's him.

If he doesn't come out a winner from this draft though, I will be on the "fire Masai" bandwagon. I just hate the idea of Ed Rogers hiring his replacement. He's one of the dumbest owners in the league. Just look at what he did to the Jays over the last decade (he fired one of the best executives in the game and replaced him with one of the worst).

The league hates the Spurs as well though.

I do think he got quite lucky with DeMar for Kawhi trade.

He's been quite bad at managing assets

It's obvious what happened.

They gave Barnes a deal he doesn't deserve and it's starting next year. They decided to just tank for a single year instead of doing a throrough rebuild. Toronto doesn't have any noteworthy prospects on cheap rookie deals. Most teams gather 2-3 lottery picks and then use the flexibility of the rookie deals to overpay a good Free Agent to patch up holes. The Raptors did the opposite and gave up a lottery pick for a win now piece in Poeltl who they don't want to sell.

They didn't sell Poeltl fearing backlash from ownership and fans. Imagine giving up a lottery pick for an average center and then selling him for late first round picks or 2nds.

Masai is screwing the Raptors into cap hell, he's going to sign BI to a 35+M / year contract, BI is going to continue being injured and playing 40-50 games a season. Then the management will say, "if everyone was available we would be so much better", they'd say that fully knowing these guys would never play more than 20 games together in a single season.

You might say, "What about load management?" The Raptors don't have the talent for that. If they sit BI they will have half court creation issues and rely on crappy players like Barrett to do that for them.

The next trade the Raptors will make will be RJ for scraps and they will have to sell low. They'll likely have to attach a pick to move off his contract to avoid paying the tax as a lottery team.

Hey man.. there's no room for rational thinking in this thread. Please read the room.

It seems like Masai continues to trade for players who have a similar profile.

Yeah, especially with a major destination like San Antonio in the running...

Ingram is long, but he's quite different from Barrett and Barnes. He doesn't have the power slashing game of RJ, or the size of Barnes. He's a poor man's KD only without the shot to be a lethal pull-up guy.

He did. But every championship requires luck to a degree

He had built a 50 win team for 7 straight years prior to that. That isn't really luck.
