AS figured, Jays were being used as leverage, otherwise he would have signed a while ago, and obviously had preference to go back to NYM.

Guess is Bregman or bust.

I'm fine with that. I don't want a player who doesn't want to be here.

Save that money and sign Vladdy to an extension.

Interestingly, that might have played into there decision not to go overboard for Alonso. The Jays are already into the first tax level and if they do get an extension with Vlad that has a signing bonus to mitigate the income tax hit, it impacts this year's tax situation even though his new contact only would cover play starting in 2026.

That wasted money could have possibly come in handy if that is the case.

Bregman probably ends up in Houston and Alonso was never signing here.

Just sign Vladdy and call it a day. B+/A- offseason if we get this done IMO.

Yep, I want no part of that deal and I'm glad the Jays stayed away.

Alex Bregman knows what he wants -- and is holding out for it - New York Post

Top remaining free agent Alex Bregman is getting creative short-term offers but is still looking for (and expecting) six-plus years. Teams involved include the Cubs, Red Sox, Astros and Tigers.

Astros GM Dana Brown suggested a lack of optimism on Bregman, though word is they’ve come up from their reported $156M, six-year offer from November.

Bregman is a rare 30-year-old seemingly unaffected by the qualifying offer. The Pete Alonso-Mets negotiations are a reminder how much the qualifying offer/draft pick attachment changes the equation.

Sounds like the Jays are out at this point?

Not surprising, I can’t see Atkins going to 6 years (without team options) for Bregman

Same old story. Sounds like Atkins is actually trying to put that fire out before it burns any hotter though. I wonder if it was a hint that a trade for Arenado is more likely than signing Bregman. If they could pull off a deal for Arenado and Helsley…that would be more impactful than just Bregman. It would take both their infield and their bullpen to contender status along with their rotation.

Thought that last year of KK was a preposterous move by the front office. But I really appreciate his passion for the city. Glad for him.

I don’t feel one iota better about this front office long term, but from the deadline deals onwards they’ve been…not terrible?…if they can either get good contracts or good returns for Vlad and Bo and finally nail a draft they’d have to be considered as performing decent-to-quite-well lately.

Edit: usual caveat that we should probably be rebuilding, but not sure that’s on Atkins or Shapiro.
