Hubie Brown Appreciation Thread

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Sun Feb 9, 2025 9:11 pm

Great basketball mind, accomplished coach, long time broadcaster, and genuinely good guy. Today is his last broadcast. Congrats, Coach!

Any favorite memories or little known facts about him?

Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

He was great in his 'prime', but the last few years have been really tough. He really should have retired 5-10 years ago.

If you listened to what he was saying, you would learn about basketball. His delivery wasn't as exciting as others, but his knowledge far surpassed them.

He told it like it is and was also a pedagogue of sorts.

:o LeBron is 0-7 in game winning/tying FGs in the finals. And is 20/116 or 17% in game winning/tying FGs in the 4th/OT for his career. That's historically bad :o

Now you gotta give him credit, even in his later years he was still the only color commentator on the national TV who did his actual job - analyze the play.

You felt smarter by just hearing this man announce a game. It's a big loss for the basketball community that he's retiring. There will never be another Hubie Brown, but sadly, sports telecasts aren't encouraging that type of analysis anymore either.

Sad that a whole generation of fans already have no idea what he did for the Grizzlies franchise

He genuinely made you want to pick up a basketball and go play right after watching a game. Everything he said was tinged with the excitement and passion that only true love of the game can bring.

One of the few who truly understood how to teach the game. Honestly, an incalculable loss. Even in his 80s he still taught you something nearly every game. I don’t think these younger guys truly love the game like Hubie did.

One of the few good aspects of ESPN's coverage over the last decade.

Still hate the Memphis' 10-man rotation with him at the helm-- selfish reason though, i wanted J-Will to get more minutes so kind of default frustration against this coach.

But obviously, i was wrong and J-Will needed to mature and this system plus Hubie's guidance made my favorite player less-flashy but more efficient, and he eventually got a ring in Miami so not hating on Hubie now. :D Thanks Hubie!
If there is no basketball in heaven, i am not going.
