I've been a fan, but it seems like he was the only one who wasn't given minutes like other rookies. Lottery picks will get first cracks because of investment/ego, and Sass never got regular minutes and was forced to play the 1, which he is not.
Sasser should only play if there's foul trouble or an injury... And NOT as a pg. He could play with Cade, or with Shroeder.
Sasser will unfortunately not get any minutes now because of Schroder

This whole "forced to play the 1" thing is tired. Nobody forced him to do anything. He was buried on the depth chart regardless. Why isn't he beating anybody out for minutes at the 2?? Because other guys are more capable and have higher ceilings.MortSahlfan wrote:I've been a fan, but it seems like he was the only one who wasn't given minutes like other rookies. This pg thing was a gift. Another opportunity to show more versatility and maybe earn a rotation spot. If he can't adapt then quite frankly he probably doesn't have a spot in the league. He's undersized and lacks an elite skillset. You can find him in the 2nd round of every draft.

I like sassers effort, but he's undersized and not much of a playmaker. He's good as a 3rd string, but I think he's proved not to be a starter or key bench guy.
I trust JBs judgement, so if sasser doesn't play there's probably a legitimate reason.

Re: Sasser will unfortunately not get any minutes now because of Schroder
Sasser has a place in the NbA, I hope, after he’s done here (which could be soon). He’s shown enough. Thing is, on a squad like Detroit that is essentially Cade helio + team ball otherwise, he isn’t a very good fit. In addition, with a few exceptions, Sasser’s style of basketball (iso, self-create) isn’t very conducive to winning in most situations during most games.
There are a couple versions of *deluxe* Sasser I can think of off the top of my head. Cam Thomas in Brooklyn — he’s a tough shot maker and self-creator, but when Cam drives your offense, he’s the whole offense. Doesn’t work often in terms of winning. There’s also Jalen Green in Houston, who has very big games sometimes and crazy highlights. Houston may end up moving him, though, because he loses you as many games as he wins you depending on if he’s feeling it. They have lots of other talent that plays better team ball, Sengun in particular, and having both Green and Whitmore on the squad really doesn’t fit that.
Cade uses our possessions by design. Everyone else needs to be a finisher, shooter. defender, or, ideally, more than one of those. Except the 12 minutes a game Cade rests, of course, but Trajan rightly brought in another PG to handle that. Sasser… well… I’m guessing his role now is some DNPs and some heat check bench minutes. Just the way it is.
(I submitted this post for a Pulitzer, but Sho’s right, I probsbly won’t win)

Nope you won't, but good post otherwise because I agree 100%.tmorgan wrote:Sasser has a place in the NbA, I hope, after he’s done here (which could be soon). He’s shown enough. The thing about me is I can give credit where it's due. But when you say something stupid or hot take-ish, well be ready to be called on it (not you, but said convo that you hopped in on).

Re: Sasser will unfortunately not get any minutes now because of Schroder
The time for the Pistons to have team altering hopes for lower draft picks, and middling players is over. Cades ascension has decided that for the team, and for fans.
Every player has to fit a very specific mold(delightfully elaborated upon by tmorgan with the very apt Cam Thomas comparison) and if they don't, they need to be shuttled out of town, to make way for players that fit.
If Schroder works out like me, and many others hope, we'll know quickly, and then we'll see to what degree having another playmaker helps the until as a whole.
Having Ausar run the point the game Cade was out, dramatically highlighted the difference between Ausar, and Sasser, and really shows the coaching staff had zero faith in him to run the team. Really the death knell for that project.

I really never understood trading up for an undersized shooting guard in the first place. I mean, sure, he's a pretty scrappy player and can knock down some perimeter shots, but he's not going to grow and he's not going to become a PG. So what do you do with him? Maybe there is a team out there with the perfect roster for him to actually become a contributor, but we sure aren't it.

In the years I've watched basketball, one thing is for sure, and for certain, regardless of analytics;Billl wrote:I really never understood trading up for an undersized shooting guard in the first place. "Do you think he can play this position?"
Scouts fall for the same damn trap, over, and over, and over.
They scout for what they hope they can become, VS what they actually are. PG is one they screw up the most. You, me, the guy down the street, can watch a player play a few games, and can tell if they have that "thing", that makes them a floor general. There are levels to being a PG. Can they see the floor? How well can they see the floor. Can they make the right read? Can the make the right read, at the right time? Good instincts? Poor instincts?
There are more, but you can tell, especially at the PG position.
Take Ausar for instance. Sloppy handle, gets ahead of the ball, way more energy then he knows what to do with, but damn it, he just knows how to run the damn team.
PG, floor general, leader, no matter what you call it in this era of "positionless" basketball, either you are one, or you are not one. Sasser just isn't one.
