Is Patrick Mahomes on the Decline?

Post#1 » by atlantabbq99 » Tue Feb 11, 2025 5:18 pm

I've only watched a few Chiefs' games but it feels like Mahomes has lost his big arm.

He is known to have the biggest arm in the NFL but it feels like this year, the zip on his throws seems to be one notch down?

I could be wrong, but that throw he hit Worthy on, it look like he gave it his all and barely cleared 60 yards, while he has been known 80 yards. I remember he played Atlanta once and hit Tyreek on a 75yr TD.

Have any Chiefs fans noticed anything with Mahomes arm strength this year or is it just me?

Mahomes is 29 years old. If anything he’s getting better.

Yes age wise a QBs prime is probably around 32-33.

But Mahomes clearly has had an off year. And IMO it looks like he has allowed his fame and success to get to his head and he probably doesn't train or focus as much as he used to. He probably had the mindset of "I am going to win because I always do" walking into the SB.

Hopefully for his sake this loss was a wake up for him and a reminder than he still has to try to compete.

I think Russ Wilson suffered this as well.

Every QB has a down year. Even Brady had down years between his two dynasty runs.

Sometimes we put too much blame on an individual. When it was clear that his supporting cast wasn't as good this year. That includes the OL, and missing guys like Rashee Rice.

Did he play great? No. But the Eagles clearly had the better roster from top to bottom.

Russ always had certain limitations in his game due to his size. He also put on weight as he aged & lost his mobility. Which took away what made him great. You can't play backyard Football all the time if you're a step slower.

Brady doesn't have a big arm and can't run, he lives off of his IQ and pre snap reads. Mahomes lives off of his big arm, so what will happen when that goes away?

When Brett Favre lost his big arm in his 30s, he became a very average QB.

Yep. Honestly, the eagles were in his face almost every drop back, that would make any qb have an off game. It didn’t exactly help that the chiefs only called 7 run plays all game either, not that it would’ve mattered against that run defense.

7 runs plays? Did Andy hire Ryan Grubb to call plays?

I kid. But obviously that's not a winning formula. It didn't help matters that they dug themselves a hole.

Nah, he's fine.

It's just when people crowned him the new GOAT they overlooked that he was surrounded by great offensive players and coaching.

Tyreek and Travis were Top 3 players at their position and the OL was good if not better.

Now his WR are underwhelming, Kelce lost a step, and the OL mediocre.

Additionally this Super Bowl Andy Reid forgot all about the run game like he used to do 20 years ago.

Mahomes also has the highest football IQ currently in the NFL. They has QB’d his team to 5 SB’s. You seriously think he’s lost his arm strength at 29 years old? Lol

I mean... He was pretty underwhelming all season long.

QB A: 3,928 yards - 26 TD 11 INT - 67.5 completion %

QB B: 3,878 yards - 25 TD 8 INT - 68.4 completion %

One of these guys got the absolute dog piss knocked out of them all night in SB 59 once the refs finally stopped extending their drives for them and the other guy is Derek Carr.

This tells me that Geno will be MVP of the league with Klint Kubiak as his OC.

if you go by expected pythagorean win percentage, the chiefs outperformed their expected record by even more than the 2022 vikings did - who everyone and their brother called a fraudulent team

looking at that, the chiefs were probably really lucky they even made it to the super bowl :dontknow:

The chiefs had 10 different 1 score games, 11 if you include the bills game in the AFCCG, so really things could’ve gone the other way but just so happened to bounce their way every single time.

His arm looked fine on the two long TD passes.

He’s put on weight compared to even a couple of years ago but he still runs for big yards.

Maybe the pick 6 he threw, running right and throwing back towards the middle, isn’t an int a couple of years go when he’s lighter and throwing harder.

He misses Kelce from a couple of years ago who put up huge RAC. Let’s face it, ever since he got with Taylor, he’s not half the weapon he used to be. We can joke about the sex wearing him down but it’s age and probably focus, not being as hungry to be great.

Mahomes was 8th in QBR this season and last season. He very clearly hasn't been the best QB the last two years. Allen and Lamar have surpassed him.

He's got limitations. Those other two have evolved and he's stayed the same. The problem for him is that you can only keep getting lucky for some. You can only have your special teams block game winning kicks, and win by single score games for so long. Eventually, those skill players on offense and defense get older.
