If Draymond can’t see that the elite offenses of today are playing smart basketball, then that says more about his lack of intelligence than anything else.

Yeah I'm surprised Draymond sees it this simplistically. The Celtics are the team that gets the most grief for 3pt shooting, but I watch them every night and see a team that playing chess at a very high level. Hunting mismatches, elite ball movement, manipulating the defense for wide open shots. And the fact that those open shots are often from 3pt range makes the utmost sense considering 3 is more than 2.

Maybe it’s not just old guys yelling at clouds and there is actually something to what many have been saying for years now.

To be clear, not saying you can’t like today’s NBA or even prefer it.

Just saying there has been a clear change in how the sport is played. It looks drastically different than it did 15+ years ago.

Older players have been saying it, you’ve had many die hard life long fans (like myself) who went from watching multiple games per night, to not watching any NBA at all.

Again not saying you can’t like current NBA, but there is no denying the style/product of the game has changed drastically.

This is true. Its sort of like how sabermetrics changed baseball, guys fishing for walks and home runs and the in between game died there as well. But its more noticeable in the NBA, where action is happening on every single play.

Yes, its more efficient to strictly play for 3's, free throws and layups/dunks. But it feels limiting, like 2/3 of the court is just space you're navigating and not being used for strategic play.

It's also an easy sell to the players, who already hate the regular season, because its far less effort to move the ball around for a 3 than it is to try to create efficient two point looks that aren't layups/dunks.

There's been a massive change to the game how it used to be. And it's not down to just X/O's and more 3PTA. During the regular season the game is called way, way differently than it was 10-15 yrs ago. Travels, carries and very blatant moving screens are all ok to open up all those threes and ball movement. Brush contact is called on drives regularly so defense has had to adjust to just rotate and contest without touch. Come playoffs it's called properly again but this is a joke to us old heads.

Nobody has ever played chess in 82 games regular season. It's the same plays and schemes. Everybody knows what is going to happen. It is in the playoff you start playing chess. Working on matchups, finding holes in the other team gameplan etc.

I agree with that I think Ive liked watching Lebron for this reason.

I think that Lebron being being the most talented player ever also has something to do with how he's able to dictate possessions but yea the threes have dumbed down the game imo

We’re on an NBA forum so of course there’s a high percentage of supporters of the game,

but the game is currently very two dimensional and boring. Even here, we’re having a lot of friction about it.

So don't watch, it's a really simple solution to the problem.

Probably not the first to say it but David Stern was a better commish than Adam Silver. Stern chose the wrong successor.

Stern would have given draymond a 40 game suspension for that punch on Jordan Poole. If draymond would have tried to threaten with retirement than stern would have shrugged his shoulders and said, "good luck"

Green's just mad that his team is mid and is being beaten by the very same style that his team helped create.

And those of you wishing Stern was still in charge don't realize that he'd be all in on the gambling too. He's also responsible for the NBA moving from a team sport to an entertainment product driven by stars. Now that the real stars are not really entertainment celebrities and the team sport concept is returning, the model is backfiring. Plus, the Stern era was defined by the NBA threatening to move teams if the cities didn't fund arenas for their billionaire owners. Let's not romanticize things.

Furthermore, when the games really matter, the NBA is far from boring. It's that the season is too long and everyone is starting to realize that beating a bad team in January is inconsequential. Better to save health and energy for the playoffs and let your young players get some time on the court.

The reality is the “chess match” aspect of the league is greater than it’s ever been. There’s never been a time in NBA history where defenses are forced to adjust more. There’s never been a time before where everyone on the floor is a threat offensively.

The point is the "chess match" aspect has been largely taken out of the player's hands. There is an analytics-driven optimal style of play, which yes, involves taking a high percentage of threes and is not entertaining to watch for some. Individual talents and team chemistry will always prevent the league from being completely homogeneous when it comes to strategy, but you can put 5 guys on the floor who have the brains of a LeBron or whomever else you think is a basketball genius, and in a grand sense they'll never be able to outsmart an analytics team.

the very smart guys are not competing with the analytics team. Moreover, they're the ones on the floor making decisions, people outside can only give them inputs to prepare.

NBA is barely a sport anymore. A large percentage of the passionate fans left are gamblers who get the rush from betting. For the common sport fan however, gameplay has never been worse. Say what you want about the 2000s but I’ll take the boring chess match over this anyday
