Vlad's the one most at risk of losing money here if he doesn't sign a deal. He could easily just have another season in 2025 like he did in 2022 or 2023. Hold strong, Ross. Don't give in.

If they choose not to re-sign him, then they have to trade him before the season starts... No sitting on the fence with our 2 best assets.

Eff that. Give in and get it done ffs. Both Atkins' and Shapiro’s job literally should depend on it. As soon as they were willing to pay Soto, they forced this upon themselves. I know its way larger than any previous 1B contract, but everything is different now after the Ohtani and Soto contracts.
I hope they are just working out hiw much is deferred by now…otherwise he is a goner.
Also, its crazy that they haven’t even spoken to Bo at all yet. I realize he never gave a deadline, but even if they are simply doing Vladdy first because of his self imposed deadline.. you would think they would at least tell his agent that. I would think Bo would be open to waiting to start negotiations until mid season after last year.

Clearly not going to happen, they have one of the highest payrolls in baseball in 2025. They'll deal him at the deadline if the team sucks again.

They're both already goners anyway if this team sucks again (and there's a decent chance of that). Let's hope they don't ruin this team's future any further before they go by giving a long-term anchor contract out to a player who isn't even close to comparable to Shohei/Soto.
And they clearly have no interest in Bo, replacing him was part of the reason they dealt for Gimenez.

Re: Official Blue Jays 2025 Spring Training Thread
Yeah, management should be fired if ownership has any sort of spine.
It’s a miracle to me that Shapiro didn’t extend Vlad two or three years ago when we held some of the power. I mean his whole MO was what he did in Cleveland when he locked in his young players with early long-term contracts. I know Shapiro’s value to the club is his inside track into the MLB office in New York and finishing the reno, but he’s been shirking his duties here related to team building - either by not giving Ross a clear mandate or by not firing Ross along time ago.
I mean, even offering Vladdy a 10-year deal after his monster 2021 would’ve put us ahead of where we are now. Even his peak 2021 market value (tempered by buying out 4 years of team control!) would be a whole lot lower than waiting to let Yankee and Dodger contracts set Vlad’s 2025 contract price.

Organization can be defined as an organized body of people with a particular purpose. Not random.

Clearly?!?... Do you think Atkins/Shapiro know what they're doing, there's zero foresight. If they wait till the deadline then the offers will be a lot lighter... Not a way to rebuild a team when your farm system is already weak.

I think it's obvious they're trying to win in 2025 to keep their jobs and trading Vlad away before the season starts won't help accomplish that goal. He's not going anywhere until the deadline at best.

Agreed. Unlike Soto and Ohtani, there is a ceiling to what teams are going to offer Vlad. He is essentially a DH already and a bad baserunner, and that's at age 25 in his physical prime. If his bat was consistently great then that would be a different story, but in six years he's been: slightly above average, slightly above average, great, very good, above average, and great. He's never had consecutive great seasons. Teams are smarter nowadays when it comes to value. Vlad will get his money due to his bat (if he has another great season in 2025), but teams will factor in the other stuff too which will likely drop his overall number.
Hold firm and if he's still on the team by the end of 2025, then reevaluate. They could still re-sign him after he tests free agency. Smart play (besides trading him which they won't do) is seeing if he can duplicate what he did in 2024 before committing. Even if that adds money to his deal, the certainty would make it worth it. If he has another 2022 or 2023 season, then the number will drop big time.

Agreed. His contract demands after a good 2025 would probably just be similar to what they are right now. His current bargaining position assumes that he is a consistent producer - which he has not been. His contract ceiling is not unlimited, just based on his position and body.

He isn’t asking for Soto money. And they arent getting anyone better any time soon. so they need to hang on to the best hitter they got if they want to compete during this decade.

I fully expect Ross and Shapiro to screw this up like how they have screwed this franchise. Please, prove me wrong here!

I don't know that they'll be a *lot* lighter, tbh. Especially with the expanded format, there's still going to be 20 or so teams 'in the mix' at the deadline who might want to add pieces, and most of those other 10 teams wouldn't be adding pieces now regardless.
You're getting Vlad to help push for the pennant, but more importantly, for the post-season. Neither of those are really based on the first 100 games for competitive teams.

I don't entirely agree... There's more teams with playoff aspirations at the start of the season, not only that, but the teams trying to trade for him might view it as an opportunity to sell Vladdy on their organization long term over the course of the season, as opposed to just a playoff rental.
